The state and government vigorously safeguard press freedom, albeit more effectively in the continental Netherlands than in their outlying provinces.

Moreover, the majority of Dutch journalists are individuals of the Dutch Federation of Journalists (NVJ), an active union that advocates for safe working conditions and fair compensation.

In terms of the legal structure, while a strong legal framework successfully protects press freedom, the government has failed to provide legally mandated access to official documentation for numerous years.

Most of the time, the documentation requested by journalists was late, erroneous, or incomplete. The powers granted to security agencies to decode communications networks and tap phones and internet communication systems also pose a danger of breaching source confidentiality.

Historically, expenses in the Dutch entertainment and media (E&M) sector have been greater for non-digital industries than for digital industries. Expenses for 'old school' media were predicted to fall further in 2019 to 5.8 billion euros, while those for digital media were expected to rise to around four billion euros.

Looking at financial documents from various media players in the Netherlands, however, two things become clear:

First, the media environment in the Netherlands is relatively consolidated, with a few firms dominating their respective segments.

Second, digital companies like Google, Facebook, and Netflix are already making an impact. However, estimating their exact market size in the country is difficult. For example, Facebook Netherlands BV sends figures to the parent business, which are then used in financial reporting.

The Media Act establishes criteria for public broadcasters and programming in the Netherlands.

Programs on public channels: The mission of public broadcasters is to provide news, educational, and children's programming in addition to political and sports programming. They also cover unique occasions like holidays and days of commemoration across the nation and the diversity of society should be reflected in the programming on public television. Plus, public broadcasters get central government funding to accomplish these goals.

Limitations on sponsorship and advertising: Public channels may run some advertising, although less frequently than commercial networks. Commercial interruptions are not permitted during programming on public channels. Also, sports and art programs are the only ones that can be sponsored.

Broadcaster requirements: The programs on the public system are produced by the broadcasting organizations NOS and NTR. To receive airtime, broadcasting organizations must fulfill a number of requirements. For instance, they must aim to create programs that reflect their vision and have at least 50,000 members.

Additionally, money from the federal government is not given to commercial broadcasters and hence, fewer rules apply to them. However, there are some requirements laid forth by the Media Act for commercial broadcasters and their programs.

They are not permitted to air commercials for more than 12 minutes every hour, for instance. It is forbidden to sponsor news and current affairs programs. Commercial broadcasters are likewise required to abide by child protection laws.

According to research on media trust in the Netherlands, 77% of respondents indicated they trusted the radio, followed by the printed press and television. In comparison, online social networks were the least trusted, with 85% of respondents saying they did not trust the medium.

Except for Sundays and several public holidays, Dutch newspapers are published every day in the Netherlands. The magazine industry has also taken blows. Huisgenoot stands as the top-selling weekly magazine in South Africa and yet it has faced a decline of nearly 20% in circulation over the last few years. The industry also suffered the loss of South African TV Plus magazine, a publication which ran for 23 years.

While newsprint has taken a toll, not all print media is dead - nor is it even in the red. Retail South African print media has grown. Magazines such as FTG Media (owned by retail group TFG), Man, and Sports Club have all seen growth in circulation.

The changes seem to point to the changing landscape of news and entertainment. Readers are looking for news as soon as it breaks; which is easier to do from a digital outlet. On the other side, from an entertainment and advertising space, print media is still a strong contender in the overall industry.

2. Research the journalist & their track record

When you’re proactively pitching a story to the media, you’ve got a clear objective. It might be unveiling a new product, doing some PR damage control, or announcing a new hire. 

But when you’re assessing requests the other way around, the objective isn’t always as clear. 

What might seem like a straightforward interview request from a respected publication could turn into a reputation-damaging story without proper vetting.

Thoroughly research each and every journalist that sends a request (even if they’re just asking for a comment or statement). 

Check their social media updates. Google their past coverage. Look at their LinkedIn profiles. Use a media database to track down their history of covering your industry and brand, their beat, their story and angle preferences, and any other noteworthy tidbits you can find about their work.

Is their coverage aligned to the type of reporters you trust? Let this answer guide your decision.

No one needs to be told that PR is an industry built on relationships.

The final thing to take under consideration is who the request is coming from. Have you been building a relationship with the journalist or media outlet? Is it a reporter you have a good rapport with? If the answer is ‘yes,’ it’s an easy yes. If it’s not a journalist or media outlet you care to forge a relationship with, politely decline.

As your pitching efforts take off, stay away from the knee-jerk reaction to accept each one that comes your way. In the long run, it’s far more strategic to say no to those that don’t align with your brand values or business priorities or those that don’t further important industry relationships.

Trello is the solution to this problem.

You can create a specific project to-do list or just have one giant to-do list. Create tasks and then add checklists and details within the tasks. Another benefit to Trello, is the mobile app. You can update lists on the go. Additionally, you can invite your team or manager to view the list, helping you to stay aligned. A lot of agencies and clients are familiar with this platform, which also helps take the frustration out of introducing it to the team.

PR Tool #7: Google Drive or Dropbox for Cloud Storage

Another app to add to your list of PR tools is Dropbox or Google Drive. Having backups of our files is really important in case our laptop breaks or is stolen. In addition, having our files in the cloud means we (or our team) can access our documents wherever. In the event of a catastrophe, you'll have easy access to your files, and cloud storage also means simple sharing when the need arises. 

PR Tool #8: Focus Keeper for Productivity

HIIT training has become increasingly popular over the last year or so. This is the concept of doing intense bursts of exercise, with short rests. Why not apply the HIIT method to productivity too? I’m easily distracted, and I find that doing short bursts of intense concentration followed by a short break increases my productivity. There’s an app called Focus Keeper, which allows you to set focus periods (usually around 15-30 minutes), followed by a break. Think of it as HIIT for the mind!
