André Pechmann, Director Communications at Microsoft Germany, discusses impactful AI use cases and Microsoft’s investments in Germany, the evolution of AI from a tool into a team member, the risk of interchangeable communications, and the value Meltwater provides through fast and reliable media analysis.

1. What was your personal PR highlight of 2026?

My personal highlight was the events featuring our CEO, Satya Nadella. Satya captivated our audiences with compelling local stories. It was impressive to see specific AI use cases from organisations such as the Munich Fire Department, Fraunhofer, and the European Patent Office presented on stage alongside Satya.

Another highlight was the groundbreaking ceremony for our new data centres in North Rhine Westphalia in Germany. Numerous television interviews and extensive media coverage brought significant visibility to our investments in Germany.

2. What might surprise comms leaders in the next two years?

Many people are still discussing AI as a tool. The more significant change will be that AI increasingly operates as a member of the team.

We are already experiencing this in our daily work. Agents assist with preparing for and following up on meetings, create summaries, and identify action items, while Copilot Cowork consolidates information from documents, emails, and chats. As a result, communications professionals spend less time on organisation and research and more time on strategy, creativity, and stakeholder management.

3. What is something you believe about AI in the communications industry that some communication professionals probably would disagree with?

I believe that AI is not the greatest challenge facing communications professionals. The greater risk is mediocrity. As AI takes over standard tasks, interchangeable content will continue to lose relevance. From my perspective, training in AI is therefore less important than developing and strengthening our core professional capabilities.

This is also reflected in a finding related to the “transformation paradox” that we identified in the Microsoft Work Trend Index 2026. Many employees want to use AI, have a good understanding of it, and recognise its value, but only 13% feel genuinely rewarded for experimenting with AI. The greatest challenge lies neither in the technology nor in employees, but in the ability of organisations to transform themselves.

4. What is the biggest benefit of using the Meltwater platform for your team?

For us, the greatest value of Meltwater lies in its speed and reliability when handling ad hoc requests. At a company such as Microsoft, we frequently need to analyse media coverage of current topics, events, or company news within a very short timeframe and prepare the findings for both the communications team and senior leaders.

Meltwater helps us identify relevant information quickly, put developments into context, and produce well founded reports without spending hours conducting manual research.
