By default, ChatGPT generates copy that can feel very bland and generic. But you don’t have to settle for that, you can easily teach it to mimic your brand’s tone of voice so that the results are easier to edit. This marketing ChatGPT prompt should be on top of your list.

There are a couple of different ways to do this, and for great results, there’s no reason why you can’t use both of them together. 

If you have already established and documented your tone of voice guidelines, you can simply incorporate them into a prompt whenever you want ChatGPT to create something for you, like this:

ChatGPT Marketing Prompt: "Please use these tone of voice guidelines when responding to my following prompt: It must be clear, easy to understand, and concise. It must sound authentic and human. It must inspire energy and provoke action. It must feel lively and energetic. It must sound knowledgeable and well-informed. It must be accessible and friendly, with no complex jargon."

An alternative approach is to simply show ChatGPT some examples of copy that matches your tone of voice, perhaps from existing resources such as blog posts or marketing materials. To do this, we must first explain to ChatGPT what we are trying to achieve: 

ChatGPT Marketing Prompt: "I need you to help me create some text. First I want you to look at some examples of writing to understand the style you should emulate. After this prompt, I will paste a writing example for you to analyze, and I want you to say “OK”. I will keep posting new examples, and you should keep saying “OK” until I say “READY”. Then you should summarize the style and tone of voice in a few sentences before I ask you to start writing for me."

Once you have pasted in a few examples and then typed READY, the AI should tell you how it understands the tone of voice in the examples. You can then correct it with further instructions (e.g. “I want you to be less formal.”) before asking it to complete whatever writing task you need.

Need a marketing email in a hurry, but running dry on inspiration? You can use a marketing ChatGPT prompt to create an email copy for a specific objective, using existing product information as its reference point. For example, you might want to drive demo requests for a SaaS product, so you can use existing copy from a product page on your website, a brochure, or a sales deck to make it understand the product’s selling points:

ChatGPT Marketing Prompt: "In my next prompt I will provide you with some text from a web page promoting my company’s project management SaaS product. Acting as a marketing copywriter, use this information to create a marketing email persuading people to visit our website and fill out a form to request a product demonstration. Include a strong subject line that will encourage people to open the email. The target audience is senior project managers in technology companies with a turnover of at least $ 50 million."

Enter this prompt, and then the copy containing the product information, and ChatGPT will produce the email for you. Remember to include the purpose of the email (e.g. demo requests, content downloads, sales) to get the best results. You can also help ChatGPT to improve the email by following up with:

ChatGPT Marketing Prompt: "Is there any further information I can provide which will help you to improve this email?"

The tool will ask you to give it some more specific details to fine-tune the email. And remember, even if you’re generally happy with the output from ChatGPT, it’s a good idea to edit it and add a little human touch to make the copy sparkle more than the AI is capable of.

It’s always good to have a choice of email subject lines so you can A/B test open rates, and ChatGPT is really good at generating a lot of options very quickly.

ChatGPT Marketing Prompt: "In my next prompt I will provide you with some text for a marketing email. Use this text to create 10 alternative subject lines which will encourage people to open and read the email."

Alternatively, you can simply paste in an existing subject line, and ask ChatGPT to provide alternate versions. If you want to include personalization, that’s easy too, simply alter the original prompt slightly like so:

ChatGPT Marketing Prompt: "In my next prompt I will provide you with some text for a marketing email. Use this text to create 10 alternative subject lines which will encourage people to open and read the email, and make sure to include the recipient's name for personalization."

Content planning for social media can be tedious sometimes. That's why there are social media management tools out there. Sure, sometimes you get to create fun stuff, but a lot of the time you can find yourself trying to write ten different tweets to promote the same message, and then you have to do it again for Facebook, LinkedIn, and whatever other platforms you need.

The good news is that a ChatGPT marketing prompt can make light work of this. We can use a similar technique that we used to create an email in step 3; simply ask the AI to analyze a relevant piece of information and use that as the reference to create our social media posts.

ChatGPT Marketing Prompt: "In my next prompt I will provide you with some text from a web page promoting my company’s new range of organic coffee pods. Acting as a social media manager, use this information to write 10 tweets that will encourage people to visit that web page and purchase a sample pack of our coffee. The target audience is time-pressed parents who want high-quality gourmet coffee at home, in a hurry."

You can ask it to repeat the process for other social platforms with a simple “Now do 10 posts for LinkedIn” or even just ask it to create another 10 tweets. You’ll fill your content schedule in no time!

This is great for creating a lot of text content, but what about image-based channels like Instagram? You’ll need to create the photography or graphics yourself, but you can get ChatGPT to give you some ideas for what kind of content you can produce: 

ChatGPT Marketing Prompt: "My business makes high-quality organic coffee pods for people who want to enjoy gourmet coffee at home, in an easy, convenient way. Please give me 10 ideas for Instagram posts to promote this product."

You can also use this kind of prompt for other platforms such as TikTok.

Let’s say you need to create a web page, or even a whole site, in a hurry. You can ask ChatGPT to write a draft of the web copy based on some reference material such as a product description, use case, or even just a basic brief. 

ChatGPT Marketing Prompt: "In my next prompt I will provide a description of my company’s new product. Use this information to write some fun, punchy copy for a product page on our website. The copy should consist of a page title, 200-word intro section, 3 sections focusing on the main product features of around 150 words each (include section titles), 5 bullet points highlighting the product benefits in around 20 words each. Finally, there should be a call to action at the bottom of the page to persuade people to add the product to their shopping cart."

You could even use a marketing ChatGPT prompt for SEO to sprinkle some SEO magic on the copy by asking it to optimize for a specific search term.. For example, we could add this to the prompt:

ChatGPT Marketing Prompt: "Ensure the text is search optimized for the term “organic coffee pods” to improve our website’s ranking for this phrase."

As always, it’s important for a good writer to edit the output and add the human touch, but if you need to create a lot of web pages, this is a good way to get quick first drafts.

Whatever your company sells, there are almost certainly multiple ways that product or service can be used, by different types of customers. But what if there are other use cases you haven’t even thought of, just waiting for you to seize the opportunity? 

Try asking ChatGPT to come up with alternative use cases for your products with a prompt like this: 

ChatGPT Marketing Prompt: "I work for a SaaS company that collects local data for every region in the country, right down to individual streets. We get the data from a variety of sources, and it includes property values, crime rates, reviews of local restaurants and other retail outlets, population density, demographic data of residents, quality of educational facilities, quality of medical facilities, and more. For $100 a month, subscribers can access all of this data, with the ability to interrogate and analyze the data in any way that they want. Please suggest 10 use cases for this product, highlighting who the potential customer would be for each use case, and what the product benefits to them could be."

It’s likely that a lot of the use cases ChatGPT suggests will be ones you’re already familiar with, but maybe there will be some new ideas. You can follow up by asking the AI to explain a particular use case in more detail, or even create a suggested marketing plan for targeting that particular buyer if it’s in a sector you are unfamiliar with.

Building a good understanding of who your different customers are can really help you to focus your marketing efforts more accurately. Most marketing execs will already have a clear idea of who your different types of buyers are, or you might only have an incomplete picture of them, but either way, you can use a ChatGPT prompt to flesh those personas out:

ChatGPT Marketing Prompt: "My company sells high-quality coffee pods for cash-rich, time-poor customers who want gourmet coffee at home and don’t want to waste time using a traditional espresso machine. They are willing to pay a premium for convenience. One of our main target customers is the “working mom” who has a senior position at work and still cares for her school-age children. She doesn’t have a lot of spare time in the morning to make coffee before she leaves home, even though she enjoys a good quality morning pick-me-up. Please create a detailed buyer persona for this kind of person, to help us target them more effectively with our marketing campaigns."

Remember that ChatGPT isn’t infallible, so you should sense-check the personas that it creates to be sure that it accurately reflects the kind of person you want to reach.

It’s important to understand that ChatGPT is trained on data that is a couple of years old, so it doesn’t make sense to directly ask it market research questions since there’s no guarantee that it will provide relevant data. (n.b. There are plugins for ChatGPT that enable it to access more recent data from the web, but for this post we're assuming that you're just using the standard version of the product.)

The market may well have changed in that time and, in any case, even if that wasn’t a concern, marketers shouldn’t rely on ChatGPT to provide accurate information when you need a high degree of certainty. However, you can ask it to help you craft survey questions that you can use to understand your market better. For example:

9 Powerful ChatGPT Prompts for Marketing

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer and all non-straight, non-cisgender people across the globe have a long history of resistance against dehumanization, disenfranchisement, and injustice. In fact, it was the Stonewall Uprisings in New York City in 1969 that birthed Pride Month, the annual celebration of LGBTQ+ culture and rights. 

Despite the progress LGBTQ+ communities have fought for and won, their human rights and safety are continuously at great risk. In the United States, for example, many state legislatures are rolling back sexual orientation and gender identity protections as hate crimes against LGBTQ+ people are on the rise. As of June 9, 2023, the American Civil Liberties Union was tracking the progress of 491 anti-LGBTQ bills across the country.

Marketing and advertising are not immune, as shown by recent conservative backlash against major brands that market Pride collections or partner with LGBTQ+ content creators and organizations. We asked two Meltwater customers what companies and brands need to do better.

What are some of the mistakes brands make when it comes to LGBTQ+ representation?

Michael Kaye, Director of Brand Marketing and Communications at Archer, Match Group’s social-first dating app for gay men: Cisgender, gay men cannot be the default. The LGBTQ+ community includes all body types, ethnicities, identities, and races. When brands only show one silo of the community, it comes off as clearly performative and shows they were just trying to check off a box. There especially needs to be more transgender inclusion in advertising and marketing to ensure that all members of the LGBTQ+ community are represented in these conversations.

What responsibilities do companies that feature LGBTQ communities in their marketing and advertising have?

Bobby MacPherson, Director of Operations at Pride Toronto, the not-for-profit organization behind the largest Pride festival in Canada: To not make superficial, one-off campaigns. Pinkwashing happens every year. To me, it's about creating more than just that one-time campaign that is aired just in June. How do you build that campaign that's reoccurring, year-long, meaningful, and always growing? How do you continue that campaign year after year, and adapt it to whatever that community needs are?

It's just not a checkbox, you're doing it because you're trying to push a boundary a bit. For example, I understand there's always a fine line with businesses and what they can dabble in relation to politics and political things, but what frustrates me a lot of the time is, sure, 2SLGBTQ+ rights may be political, but this is also, for some, the fight to live. Why are we politicizing that? 

Just recently, we tried to feature art that was highlighting 2SLGBTQ+ folks in Ukraine and sharing their story, but we were rejected by so many places because it was too political and people want to just focus on the fun of Pride. I have goosebumps sharing that with you.

So to me, I understand we have business agendas. Sure, I would love to focus on the positive all the time too. Who wouldn't? But that's not the reality. So tying that back to the original question, it's really about authenticity. If people aren't willing to be there in the good and the bad, then don't bother doing a pride campaign.

What questions should companies and brands ask themselves as they work to be more inclusive of LGBTQ+ communities in their marketing?

MK: Before acting, focus on education and representation. Educate yourself on the queer community by bringing in partner organizations — GLAAD, Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), the Human Rights Campaign, and The Trevor Project. Ensure LGBTQ+ people are represented in your leadership teams, throughout your company, and in the room when decisions are being made. By choosing not to include the LGBTQ+ community in your marketing campaigns, brands give in to anti-LGBTQ+ activists who taint the progress of the movement thus far.

BM: A big one is, Are we avoiding stereotypes and cliches? As campaigns are being developed, the question is, How are we approaching 2SLGBTQ+ representation with authenticity and respect? That's one of the first questions I ask sponsors as they tried to get involved with Pride Toronto. The other one is, How are they consulting with the 2SLGBTQ+ community? Often, what I find is people just hire a marketing firm to work with Pride Toronto, and it doesn't really represent the community or the brand they're representing. But, we want to be working with a campaign with their senior leadership to make sure that these are the values of the organization, not just some kind of checkbox. 

And, How are they supporting 2SLGBTQ+ causes and initiatives year long? Not only in a campaign, but also in how that going back to the community. Most importantly, one of the questions I would suggest is, Are we being open to learning, evolving, and growing whatever that campaign is to something larger?

Why is LGBTQ+ representation in marketing and advertising important?

MK: At a time when homophobia is on the rise and anti-transgender legislation is sweeping the nation, the LGBTQ+ community needs support. And there are benefits to rallying behind the community, too. 

It’s better for business. Companies that commit to LGBTQ+ inclusion attract and retain top talent, and have stronger relationships with customers and key stakeholders. According to the Edelman Trust Barometer, a global survey conducted by public relations firm Edelman, more than 51% of Americans said they were more likely to work for a pro-LGBTQ company and 34% of consumers said they were more likely to buy from a brand that expressed support for LGBTQ rights, per CNBC.

The community is growing more proud and less avoidable as this demographic grows. In 2023, the percentage of adults in the United States that identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or something other than heterosexual doubled from a decade ago according to Gallup. Businesses who do not clearly support the LGBTQ+ community will lose out on them as consumers as well as see decreased sales from their allies.

BM: 2SLGBTQ+ representation in marketing and advertising is crucial for promoting diversity, fostering inclusivity, advocating for equal rights, and creating positive social change. It benefits society at large and embraces the richness of human diversity, promoting acceptance and understanding. Even that question, when I think about it, really helps us reflect on what diversity and inclusivity means. 

Marketing and advertising has really a significant impact on shaping societal norms and attitudes. By including 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in themes, in campaigns, highlighting them, companies can promote a more inclusive and diverse representation of society. It feeds into helping to combat stereotypes, break down different barriers, foster that acceptance, and really embrace the difference of sexual orientations and gender identities.

Freakonomics Radio is an award-winning weekly podcast. Host Stephen Dubner produces a 45-minute show that “explore(s) the riddles of everyday life and the weird wrinkles of human nature—from cheating and crime to parenting and sports.” Through the course of each show, Dubner talks with Nobel laureates, social scientists, economists, entrepreneurs, and his Freakonomics co-author Steve Levitt. 

High production values and edited in a tapestry of music, interviews, media snippets, this is podcast storytelling at its best. If you’ve ever considered producing a podcast, (along with This American Life,) Freakonomics is the gold standard.

The hosts of Code Switch don’t mince words: “Remember when folks used to talk about being “post-racial”? Well, we’re definitely not that. We’re a team of journalists fascinated by the overlapping themes of race, ethnicity, and culture, how they play out in our lives and communities, and how all of this is shifting.” 

Put together by a stellar team of journalists from public radio, including Kat Chow, Gene Demby, Adrian Florido, Karen Grigsby Bates, and Shereen Marisol Meraji; they ponder questions such as: “When do you call someone out for micro-aggressive racism and when do you let it go?” As PR pros, having an opportunity to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes, and see issues from multiple perspectives is always a good thing.

Startup follows the experiences of the host, Alex Bloomberg, formerly a producer of This American Life and Planet Money, as he goes through the steps necessary to launch his podcasting startup. Early on, Bloomberg nods at his credentials and lets us in on his mission to support longer format podcasts. 

Told in the style of interviews, conversations with his wife, and potential partners, Startup is a serial–not necessarily an ongoing podcast. With his NPR experience and a deft hand at pacing, you get sucked in, rooting for Bloomberg to succeed. Listen in to understand how founders approach building a business from the ground up.

Host Debbie Millman’s PR podcast is about “design and inquiry into the broader world of creative culture through wide-ranging conversations with designers, writers, artists, curators, musicians, and other luminaries of contemporary thought.” 

Think of Design Matters as “Fresh Air” for creatives. Since Millman converses with influencers, she gives PR professionals insight into their everyday worries and concerns. Perhaps hearing influencers in conversation (259 episodes are available) will help us reach out to the ones that matter to our community.

The shorthand description for Reply All is that it’s a show about the internet. Host PJ Vogt and Alex Goldman investigate stories that begin online, but have very offline human repercussions. In a recent episode, they tackle how spammy locksmiths, with the help of a call center, are enabled by Google Ad Words to be everywhere local at once. 

The joy of Reply All is that though each story starts with the internet, each segment is well-researched through distinctly analog or IRL means, including phone calls, face-to-face meetings, and interviews with those impacted by the story. Reply All sometimes feels like This American Life, but smaller in scope. Looking at stories from multiple angles is a helpful exercise in PR, as we attempt fresh angles to similar campaigns.

Hosts Alix Spiegel, Lulu Miller, and Hanna Rosin are expert storytellers from NPR and the Atlantic who specialize in storytelling about invisible things that happen all around us, including those things that are existential in nature. With their episode Outside In, they come to us with the question of “Can you change from the outside in?” 

In familiar podcast storytelling style, they highlight three real-life stories of people making the conscious choice to be different than who they are because of something (outside of them) that has occurred. The answer at the end of the episode is, Yes. 

Told in a long narrative format, you’ll find yourself rooting for the protagonists appearing in Invisibilia in each segment. Listening to how these journalists craft their stories can help PR pros with insight on how to pitch to other journalists.﻿

“Call Your Girlfriend" is a podcast for long-distance besties everywhere. These are the influencers you want to represent your brand. They’re also your audience personas come to life. Ann Friedman and Aminatou Sow are girlfriends that live across the state from each other. (It used to be across the country.) 

And in their weekly catch-up conversation, they tackle issues such as menstrual cycles, pop culture, and political news. On alternating weeks they feature in-depth interviews with their “impressive besties,” past besties include Melinda Gates, Huma Abedin, and Tavi Gevinson.﻿﻿

Host Roman Mars is the all-knowing voice of inquiry who poses a question and invites a variety of experts to chime in. The 99% Invisible team goes deep into various topics in exactly the way you need. Want to know about trend forecasting? Or specifically, more information about one of the major players in the industry, WGSN?

Listen to episode 229, The Trend Forecast; it is an unpaid commercial for WGSN and details their impressive impact on the fashion, home decor, and lifestyle industries.

Almond and Strayed often acknowledge the difficulty of making decisions, but they are clear in what they advise listeners to do.
