Instagram Video, previously called IGTV or Instagram TV, is a feature that lets users and creators share long-form videos on the app. While videos on the Instagram feed are limited to a maximum of 90 seconds, or 15 seconds if they are eligible for ads, Instagram Videos can be up to 60 minutes long.

There was once a standalone IGTV app for Android and iOS (which is no longer available in the App Store), but now Instagram Video is part of the main Instagram platform. This lets creators share long-form video content that doesn't require audiences to leave the app to see them on competing channels and apps like YouTube.

In 2021, Instagram combined Feed Video, which let users share videos to the main app feed, and IGTV to create Instagram Video. A short while after, the company stopped supporting the IGTV app. 

For brands, marketers, and creators, video content opens up new opportunities to enhance their social media marketing strategies. Instagram Videos offer many of the same benefits of long-form video content but with a more streamlined, social media experience for the viewer. Here are a few benefits that you stand to gain from Instagram Video: 

Increased visibility for products and services

In 2020, nine out of 10 Instagram users watched videos on the platform every week. And since the 2021 announcement from Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, stating that the platform would be focusing more on video content, the Instagram algorithm has favored video content, making it a great way to increase the visibility of your profile, content, products, and services. 

Video previews in the main feed draw plenty of eyes to the Instagram Video itself. According to Social Media Examiner, brands like Sephora went from getting 60,000–80,000 views on their IGTV channel videos to over 1 million views almost overnight after they started showing IGTV previews in their feed. 

Video content is one of the keys to keeping your audience engaged with your brand. The more creative your Instagram Video is, the higher the chances of getting likes, comments, and shares. On YouTube, there are three video content types that tend to do well on the platform and will also work on the Instagram app:

Creating videos like this for Instagram Video can get you great engagement and help new consumers discover your brand. It's the perfect place for longer, more detailed content; save the short videos for your Reels or TikTok and Snapchat channels.  

What Are the Instagram Video and IGTV dimensions?

When uploading a video to Instagram Video, make sure it meets these specifications and requirements:

Length: Videos that are 10 minutes or less have a maximum file size of 650MB. Videos that are between 10 minutes and 60 minutes (the maximum length long) must have a file size that is 3.6GB or less. 

Recommended cover photo size: 420px by 654px or 1:1.55 ratio

The IGTV dimensions, for both horizontal and vertical video, were the following: 

Length: 15 minutes (maximum) when uploading via mobile and up to 60 minutes when uploading from desktop

Aspect ratio: 9:16 (vertical or portrait) or 16:9 (horizontal or landscape)

You can't make content for IGTV since Instagram got rid of the IGTV tab in 2021 and stopped supporting the standalone app in early 2022.

Here's a step-by-step guide to uploading an Instagram Video.

Find it just to the right of center at the top of the home screen. 

Choose a video from your device's library or record one on the spot by tapping the camera icon. Then, tap 'Next'. You'll find it on the top right part of your screen.

Add a filter to your video by tapping the one you want from the choices at the bottom of your screen. You can also edit the length of your video by selecting the 'Trim' option and using the sliders to change where it begins and ends. When you're done, select 'Next'.

You can add a cover image to your video using the  button and choosing a picture in your device's library. Then select 'Done'. At this stage, you can add a caption, tag other accounts, add a location, or add the video to a series. 

If your video doesn't have captions, tap 'Advanced settings' to turn auto-generated captions on. This is also where you can edit how your video cover photo shows up on your grid and turn commenting on and off.

After you tap 'Share' the video will show up on your followers' Feeds as a preview showing the first 60 seconds. They have to tap 'Keep watching' to see the rest. If you have a Facebook account linked to your Instagram profile, you can also share your video there.  

As always, the length of your video will depend on its subject and what you're making it for. Instagram Videos can be up to one hour long, but in most cases, unless your viewer is on a long flight, they probably won't watch at a single piece of content on their mobile device for that long.

The platform itself recommends that Instagram creators make videos that are short and entertaining. But if your video is 60 seconds or shorter, you could make a Reel. There's no tried and true Instagram Video length, but always trim unnecessary parts wherever you can.

Great Examples of Brands Using Long-form Video

Netflix uploaded an hour-long video promoting the new series of Riverdale. The video showed Riverdale star Cole Sprouse eating a cheeseburger. Yep, that’s it, a full 60 minutes just eating a cheeseburger…

The video is actually weirdly hypnotizing. A close up on Cole’s face, while he’s making eyes at the camera, makes it impossible to look away. A staggering 1M+ people have viewed the video since it was posted!

If the sensual burger eating didn’t do it for you, then BuzzFeed might have something more up your alley. BuzzFeed decided that a game of hamster football was the only thing worthy of their first post on this new platform. 

Frustrating and yet addicting, you can’t look away as these hamsters slowly scurry across the pitch coming close to the goals posts but very rarely scoring. We can all take a lesson from this narrative — when in doubt, use cute animals.

Rather than creating new content, Gucci decided to repurpose old content on IGTV. They went back through their archives and uploaded every runway presentation since 2015. The videos have gained over 400,000 views in total and help reinforce a love for the brand and reinforced their stance as a thought leader by showcasing how they have shaped the fashion industry and trends.

As you would expect from NatGeo, they took things a bit more seriously and delivered content in a more traditional TV format. They uploaded an episode of ‘One Strange Rock,’ an award-winning TV show from filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. The video was re-edited for the new vertical format and has already gained 1.32 million views.

To raise awareness for their new Worn Wear campaign, Patagonia created a long-form video showing multiple stories from various Patagonia customers. Each had a piece of Patagonia clothing that they had held onto for many years, creating sentimental value. The video resonated with their audience and connected with them on a personal level. The longer length of the video gave Patagonia a more effective way to tell these customer stories, going into more detail and holding their audience’s attention.

So you've created your Instagram Video and published it to your account, but how do you get more views? Here are a few methods to try to boost that exposure.

Instagram is one of the few video platforms where the more hashtags you have, the better if you want your video content to be seen and discovered. To increase the visibility of your Instagram Video, use hashtags within the description. This will help make your video discoverable to non-followers as well as your usual Instagram audience.

When it comes to long-form video content, the key to getting views (as well as retaining the attention of your audience) lies in those first few seconds. Instagram Stories and Reels have proven how there's success in grabbing your audience's attention with short-form content; you'll need to apply this idea to the first 15-30 seconds of your video if you want to hook your audience and give them something to keep watching.

To draw even more attention to your video, share it to your Instagram Story. Just keep in mind that Stories chops Instagram Videos up in 15-second chapters. This is not ideal for videos that are on the longer side.

Make use of the other online platforms that you have a presence on to share your Instagram Video and get more views. Cross-posting to your Facebook account or Facebook Business Page, add the link to the video in a tweet, or embed it in a blog post.

Instagram Video: How to Use IGTV for Your Social Media Strategy

You’ve seen the beautiful, informative graphics that have popped up all over social media in the last few years. These “infographics” visually explain topics, concepts, and data that may be too cumbersome or complicated to spell out in long-form text. Infographics have been around for centuries, but their use exploded with the web and have factored into major social media trends. Turns out they’re perfect for the kind of fast-paced, attention-grabbing communication the internet — and modern marketing strategy — demand.

You don’t have to be a graphic designer to quickly and easily create marketing infographics for your website and social media feeds. And you definitely don't have to make them from scratch (unless you want to). Here is a step-by-step explanation for non-designers of how to create an infographic, along with some helpful tips.

Step 1: Know what you want your infographic to communicate

Step 5: Save, export, and share your new infographic

What kind of information do you want to get across? The answer to that question will decide the basic design of your infographic. Here are some common ways infographics are used:

Infographics are useful for explaining a series of steps or the progression of a process or system. Visual elements like arrows and timelines, showing direction and flow, feature heavily in these. In this infographic, when we wanted to show an average day in the life of a social media marketing manager, we went with a long, scrolling format to show time passing.

Charts and graphs can stand alone as their own infographics. But they can also be combined into larger images to give comprehensive overviews of data. Varying colors and shapes come in handy for setting different data points apart in these kinds of infographics. This is the route we went with this infographic illustrating footballer Mohamed Salah’s popularity on social media.

Sometimes, the data you’re summarizing isn't straightforward proportions and percentages. Here’s where you can really get creative, like in this infographic below, where we used calendar days and bold clear text to summarize the best times to post on social media.

When comparing information against each other, infographics with mirroring visual elements are a perfect option. Side-by-side charts and lists quickly communicate differences and similarities. You can see one example of this kind of infographic in the fourth slide of our Instagram post comparing Thanksgiving travel keywords. 

At this point, you're probably wondering, "Where can I create an infographic?" Luckily for non-designers everywhere, there are tons of user-friendly, web-based applications, as well as standalone software, that offer templates for creating quality visual content.

Many infographic tools have free and paid options, so you can try out the free templates, see if you like the software, and graduate to the paid plans as your needs become more sophisticated. Note that some of the free infographic makers automatically add a watermark featuring their brand that you can remove only if you subscribe to one of their paid plans.

Here’s a quick snapshot of some web-based infographic-building services:

Canva. In recent years, Canva has become a go-to for everyone from content creators to anyone with an Instagram account and news to share. Its popularity is thanks to its easy-to-understand interface, social media-friendly designs, and high-quality free version. It can create all kinds of digital visual content, but you can also choose from its collection of free and paid infographic templates. This is a great option for content marketers and non-content marketers alike.

Venngage. Like Canva, Venngage also makes creating professional-looking infographics easy with templates and easy-to-use tools. And this option may be a better bet for professionals in digital marketing and content marketing, or others with more in-depth content to present. There's a free option, but its paid business product lets you make interactive infographics and download SEO-friendly PDFs. 

Snappa. This is another software that offers dozens of infographic templates to get you started, as well as access to a library of symbols and shapes that you can incorporate into your eye-catching visual. Snappa's drag-and-drop tools make it easy to create high-quality content marketing infographics. And it has terrific sharing tools, as well. 

Piktochart. Last but not least on our list, Piktochart is a web-based application that specifically markets itself to non-designers who want to create stunning infographics and other quality data visualizations. Its paid version even helps teams collaborate on creating assets like posters and presentations.

While these tools can help you create great content, you don’t need too many design skills to build infographics with more advanced software like Adobe Creative Cloud Express, formerly known as Adobe Spark, or even more basic options like Microsoft PowerPoint. You’ll just need a framework to work from, which brings us to our next step.

Each of the infographic-building services is different, but in general, you’ll select from a library of templates or create using their library of graphics and images. Replace the “dummy” template text with your own. Add text boxes and other elements as necessary. And change colors and fonts to match your needs.

If you’re a non-designer using a graphic design tool that isn’t specifically for infographics, don’t panic. Paid and free infographic templates for your specific program, in the form of downloadable files, are just a search engine query away. 

Remember those communication goals you originally set out in Step 1? Let those guide you as you choose not only the basic structure of the infographic but also its layout and color scheme. No matter what tool you use to create your infographic, make sure to include a title at the top. It’s the first thing viewers will read, so it needs to be short, attention-grabbing, and quickly describe the information being illustrated. 

If you used outside sources to create your infographic, cite them at the bottom. Here are some questions to ask and answer before declaring your infographic done:

Is all the copy accurate, edited, and proofread?

Did you double-check all the numbers or other data points being presented are correct?

Is everything aligned and sized correctly?

As a whole, is it easy for the intended audience to understand?

Is it readable? (Take extra care with this question and consider how your intended audience will consume the infographic. For example, will your infographic look good on a mobile device or a screen for a presentation?)

With this last look over your infographic, you’ll be able to share it with confidence that it is communicating the information, and message, you want it to.

With your infographic saved in the program of your choice, go ahead and download it in the format that best suits your needs. PDF or SVG are common options for graphics you want to embed in a blog post, webpage, or email. When it comes to posts on social media sites like Instagram, LinkedIn, and Pinterest, PNG and JPG are great options as well.

Once you've downloaded your infographic, check it a final time for errors and image resolution. With all of these steps completed, it's time to share the infographic that you, a non-designer, have created.

Here are ten ideas for the type of content you should be posting on LinkedIn:

Once you have an idea of the content you want to create, you will need to figure out when and how often is best for you to post.

As with any content marketing strategy, you should have specific goals that you want to achieve on LinkedIn. Keep in mind that LinkedIn isn't quite like Instagram, where high-quality images of your vacation in Bali would guarantee likes. LinkedIn is, at its core, a professional social media platform whose audience consists of C-Level executives, B2B marketers, and other decision-makers. The content that you post there needs to reflect this audience and touch on the four LinkedIn SSI pillars. 

LinkedIn's optimal posting times are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., at noon, and from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Generally, these are top moments of engagement because they fall during hours when people are commuting to and from work or are on a lunch break. You can use these hours as a guide to do A/B testing to identify when your particular audience is truly online and determine your specific optimal posting times. Though they sound similar, LinkedIn Company Pages and LinkedIn Showcase Pages are different. Let's dive deeper.

A Showcase Page is an extension of a LinkedIn Company Page that is created to highlight individual brands, business units, and initiatives. Think of Showcase Pages as the talent you would highlight on X Factor — use one to spotlight a CSR initiative you are driving, promote a purpose-driven marketing campaign, or target a specific audience. A few examples of Showcase Pages are:

You'll notice that these Showcase Pages, which are listed under the "Affiliated Pages" section of a main company page, have a similar layout to a Company Page. 

Make sure that you have Admin capabilities for your company page.

Add your Showcase Page name and LinkedIn public URL.

Upload your Showcase Page logo and add a tagline.

Add buttons to your page header such as "Contact us", "Sign up" or "Register". LinkedIn automatically suggests a "Follow" button for your parent LinkedIn Company Page. 

Complete the Showcase Page overview with a description of the page, website link, contact number, industry, company size, and year the business was founded.

Depending on what your Showcase Page is highlighting, you can add your location. 

Add three hashtags to your Showcase Page. A branded hashtag works well here to make it easier for users to follow your Showcase Page.

Upload a cover image according to LinkedIn's image size recommendations.

Five tips for a stellar LinkedIn Showcase Page

Here are some tips to help set your Company Page and Showcase Pages apart.

Much like how Company Pages have business names clearly stated, make sure that you have a clear name for your Showcase Page. You don't want to choose something completely unrelated to your business or the purpose of the page. Best bet? Use your company name along with the initiative you are showcasing or the target audience you are focusing on, like EY's Women. Fast forward Showcase Page. 

Make sure that you let users know what the purpose of your Showcase Page is in the "About" tab and tagline. Take a look at Adobe's Experience Cloud Showcase Page for one good example.
