As critical figureheads, Chief Executive Officers play a key role in how corporations are perceived by the public, and so it's vital that organizations keep their fingers on the pulse of CEO-focused media.

In collaboration with .companion, a data consultancy and KPI expert, Meltwater presents the 2023 CEO Echo; a monthly media intelligence analysis of CEOs heading up some of the world's largest brands. The ranking leverages Meltwater's media intelligence capabilities and automated analysis by the .companion bot to offer readers highlights and benchmarks across the following areas:

CEO Echo for June 2023: 5% less CEO mentions

Last month, the .companion CEO metrics bot found 5% less CEO mentions than the average of the previous months. Overall, 64% of mentions captured by the CEO Echo were generated by editorial online content, while social media generated 36%. In June, CEO Echo content saw engagement drop by 97%. 

38% of all CEO mentions were related to financial news, meaning they simply referred to company figures that are often required to be disclosed by law. In contrast, the context of 62% of mentions was linked to corporate agendas. Overall, the tonality of mentions was equally positive and negative.

 Bernard Arnault, LVMH CEO, dominates with 12% CEO Echo coverage

What role does a CEO play in a company's overall corporate messaging, whether voluntary or involuntary? The CEO Footprint aims to answer this question. 

In June, Bernard Arnault, CEO of LVMH, received the highest amount of media coverage. His share of voice totalled 12.1%, the largest footprint of all top board members. In second place was Simon Roberts, CEO of Sainsbury's, with 6.3%, and Aliko Dangote, CEO of Dangote Group, took the third spot with 4.7% share of all mentions. 85% of conversations around Arnault’s echo were not related to company financials, and thus were above average for agenda-driving topics and content. 23% of the LVMH CEO's echo came from editorial media and 77% from social media. Content that mentioned Arnault generated 18 interactions (clicks, shares, likes) per mention. This shows that audiences are highly engaged and made Arnault the 20th most engaged CEO in the ranking. In total, mentions for Bernard Arnault were positive significantly more often than negative. We can assume this had a corresponding impact on his overall reputation. 

Møller Maersk’s CEO, Vincent Clerc, takes the number 1 spot 

Two common goals widely shared by media teams are communicating key messages and building a favorable reputation, both of which rely heavily on editorial mentions. The Communication Excellence ranking analyses and aggregates media volume (removing financial report listings). 

Vincent Clerc, CEO of Møller Maersk, was ranked first in June. Outside of the paywall, 86% of his digital echo discussed the CEO in stories beyond financial figures. Stories generated 60 engagements per mention, signifying readers are highly interested. Furthermore, coverage was significantly more positive than negative. As a result, the response to Møller Maersk’s CEO received 4.5 points. Kenichiro Yoshida, CEO of Sony came in second place with a score of 3.3 and David Calhoun, CEO of Boeing, took third place with a Communication Excellence score of 3.3 points. 

Aditya Mittal, ArcelorMittal’s CEO, wins first place

Simply having a social media profile is not enough. If you want to have an impact on opinion leaders outside of editorial offices or on consumers and digital elites who are not easily accessible through the mass media, you have to be mentioned frequently on social media. The Social Excellence Index answers whether a company's attempts at this have been successful. 

Last month, Aditya Mittal, CEO of ArcelorMittal, topped the ranking with a Social Excellence score of 2.5 points. 96% of the conversation came from social media and his engagement was somewhat indifferent with 3 interactions per mention. Moreover, the sentiments of his mentions were 95% positive, meaning Mittal was ahead of runners-up Emma Walmsley, CEO of GlaxoSmithKline, with 2.4 points and Oliver Zipse , CEO of BMW, who placed third with 2.1 points.

Rolf Eberhard Buch, CEO of Vonovia, has the highest number of mentions surrounding social responsibility 

The .companion metrics bot also determines whether CEOs appear in the digital media echo as leaders in the context of the UN's sustainable development goals, e.g. in the context of social responsibility or climate and environmental protection. Our Responsibility Index shows how well this has been achieved. For this index, the metrics bot only analyses mentions related to this topic. 

In June, Rolf Eberhard Buch, CEO of Vonovia, saluted us from first place in the responsibility ranking, with 50% of Vonovia CEO's mentions related to social responsibility topics. His engagement rate was 102 which can be considered highly engaged. The tonality of media conversations was significantly more positive than negative. Overall, Buch’s Responsibility Index came to 5.6 points. Vincent Clerc, CEO of Møller Maersk, followed in second place with 3.2 points, and Ben van Beurden, CEO of Royal Dutch Shell, in third place with 2.8 points.

R Mupita, CEO of MTN Group, takes the number 1 spot for the financial echo

CEO mentions in the context of balance sheet figures offer little scope for setting content-related agendas but are crucial for building investor confidence. In this environment, the metrics bot determines which CEOs were mentioned from a financial standpoint, forming an index for investor communication. 

In June, the .companion metrics bot identified MTN Group's CEO, R Mupita, as the top communicator for investors after he achieved 12.4 points. 73% of his mentions were related to the financial environment, which is 1.6 times this month's average. His readership was highly interested, indicated by an engagement rate of 156.3, and he experienced significantly more negative than positive comments. He is followed in second and third place by Ben van Beurden, CEO of Royal Dutch Shell, with 4.0 points and Margherita Della Valle, CEO of Vodafone Group (2.7 points).

At Meltwater we’re always exploring new ways to integrate AI into our products to make life easier for our customers. The PR Assistant is a new ChatGPT-powered generative AI feature that helps PR executives to write impactful media pitches and press releases much more quickly, by creating a high-quality first draft based on some basic information.

Although extremely powerful, the PR Assistant is incredibly simple to use. As you can see from this screenshot, most of the options are largely self-explanatory, but we’ll run through an example to demonstrate how it all works.

To begin with, let’s use a fictional brief for a new product announcement we want to push out to the media, using the following text:

“Fluffee Stuff is a soft-furnishings manufacturer. We are launching a new range of giant cushions with popular internet memes printed on them, and plan to target college students and young adults as the key market for this product. These jumbo meme cushions are ideal for adding a little fun to any living space, lounge or bedroom, and they make great gifts. At launch, the cushions will be available with a selection of 10 of the most popular memes in history, including Success Kid, Distracted Boyfriend, and Sad Keanu, but going forward we also plan to include the top memes from each year in time for the holiday shopping season.”

This is a relatively short description. The PR Assistant can accept prompts of up to 4200 characters, and the more detail you can add to your prompt, the better the results will be. Nevertheless, this short prompt is enough for the assistant to create something we can work with.

First we’ll ask it to generate a media pitch that we can put into an email to journalists. 

We’ve set the length to “short” because we know journalists prefer email pitches to get right to the point, and the tone is “persuasive” because we really want to convince them to ask for more information. 

Next, we just need to click the Generate button and wait a moment for the results:

Not bad at all! You could use this text as is in your email outreach, although we always recommend taking a little time to personalize the output and add your own tone of voice to it. That can be done right in the app by simply clicking onto the output window and editing the text directly.

Let’s imagine the reporters have asked for more information. As well as the product photography and samples, we also want to send them a press release with all of the extra detail missing from the pitch email.

Using the same prompt, we can simply select the Press Release option, choose a longer length, and for the purposes of this example we’ll change the tone to “Enthusiastic” to keep the release more engaging.

Here we can see that the PR Assistant has generated a full medium-length AI press release, and taken a good guess at filling in information we didn’t include in the prompt, such as the website address, and quote from a spokesperson. 

You can simply add in the name of a spokesperson and keep the quote, or use the “Add/Edit Quotes” feature to ensure that the Assistant uses real quotes that you specify.

You can add as many quotes as you like, each attributed to a different spokesperson if required. Once you’ve done this, the PR Assistant will be sure to include them all in the press release or brief that it generates.

If you’re not happy with the output, you can simply ask the PR Assistant to regenerate it, and the AI will make another attempt, as many times as you want.

It’s really that simple. The PR Assistant helps you to generate media pitches and press releases much more quickly, delivering a good quality first draft which can then be edited into the final document far quicker than writing the whole thing from scratch.

The conference started out with a bang began as our master of ceremonies, Meltwater VP of Culture, Zubair Timol introduced a fantastic and entertaining keynote with the founder and CEO of Skinnygirl, Bethenny Frankel. Frankel chatted with Jenny Force, senior marketing director at Meltwater, about her secrets to spotting entrepreneurial opportunities, staying ahead of the game, and the role social media plays in maintaining a personal brand.

We then jumped into a riveting Product Keynote, helmed by our CEO, John Box, and CTO, Aditya Jami who gave an inside look at how Meltwater helps companies use data to fuel growth, and maintain a competitive edge, with an eye toward the future.

Here are some further details about the company: [add in as much information about the prospect here]

You could help ChatGPT do a better job by also providing it with some background information on your agency, such as specialist expertise, and industry experience. Although it would be wise to edit the emails before sending, this is still a much quicker way to generate a lot of tailored emails rather than writing them all from scratch.

How To Use ChatGPT for Creating a PR Plan

Even though the tool can only be used to output text (for now) you can still use it to help you build new business PR agency pitch decks.

Two slides should be dedicated to the jumbo-cushion launch, but also include an overview of a plan for their ongoing PR needs. For each slide include three sections; the text to be displayed on the slide, a description of the imagery to be used on the slide, and notes covering the key points we should discuss when we present that slide. 

Again, bear in mind that the more background information you provide, along with specific details about your needs, the better ChatGPT can work for you.

Reducing costs is where ChatGPT can really shine for PR agencies, as it can help you automate a lot of time-consuming tasks and help your executives to spend less time on low-value work, so they can spend more time on high-value billable projects for clients.

How to Build PR Coverage Reports with ChatGPT

For example, when building coverage reports, you can use ChatGPT to quickly summarize the content of long articles using a prompt like this:

PR PROMPT: I work for the Fluffee-Stuff PR department. Please summarize the following article, focusing on the points that are most relevant to our brand. Also, explain the sentiment of this article, and whether it’s positive or negative for our company. [Add article text here]

While we don’t recommend you replace your copywriters with ChatGPT, it can be a useful tool to help them create content faster. When it comes to writing engaging copy that achieves the specific objectives you need, human writers are simply better than AI, but there are a couple of problems with writing that AI can help with:
