Zero-click search is when a search engine or AI assistant gives instant answers directly on the search engine results page, without sending the user to a website. Someone asks ChatGPT or Google's AI Overview a question, gets a complete answer in the response, and never clicks through to read the source.

This isn't entirely new: featured snippets, knowledge panels, and People Also Ask boxes have long answered some informational queries directly. Voice search does much the same thing.

What's changed is the depth of the AI-generated summaries now appearing in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, and AI assistants.

And that is happening a lot, particularly as SERP features and AI-generated answers take up more space in search. The impact on organic click-through rate (CTR) is already visible. A 2025 Pew Research Center study found that when a Google AI Overview appeared, users clicked a traditional search result just 8% of the time, compared with 15% when there was no AI summary. Only 1% clicked a source cited inside the AI Overview.

For SEO, that's traditionally been framed as an organic traffic problem: fewer clicks, lower referral numbers, weaker attribution. This is where the fundamentals of public relations are shifting: PR's job has always been shaping perception, and now that perception is being formed by AI systems as much as by human readers. For PR, it's something else entirely. If an AI system summarizes your category and never sends anyone to your site, the citation itself is the entire impression your brand makes. There's no follow-up visit to fix a weak first impression. What the AI says about you, and whether it says anything about you at all, is the whole interaction.

For some prospects, that answer may be the only brand touchpoint in the customer journey.

It’s tempting to treat zero-click search as a technical SEO (search engine optimization) problem because it happens on search engines. But the data points to something PR teams directly influence: how often your brand is mentioned across the web.

Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands to see which factors correlate most strongly with AI Overview visibility, and brand web mentions came out far ahead of backlinks, with roughly three times the predictive strength. A backlink tells an algorithm where a page sits in a link graph. A brand mention tells an AI system what to associate with your name, in what context, and with what description.

PR has a direct role here because many of those brand mentions come from the coverage PR earns, including articles, interviews, reviews, and expert commentary. But that coverage shouldn’t describe the company differently from its own website. If PR pitches you as an “AI media intelligence platform” while your product pages call you a “social listening tool,” AI systems are left with conflicting descriptions of what you actually do.

To fix this, PR and marketing should agree on the core language used to describe the brand, its products, and the problems they solve and use it consistently across earned and owned content.

PR teams often treat a placement as less valuable when the publication mentions the brand but doesn’t link back to its website. In AI search, that assumption no longer holds up.

According to AirOps' 2026 State of AI Search report, about 85% of brand mentions in AI search come from third-party pages rather than a brand's own site, and brands are 6.5 times more likely to be cited through third-party sources than through owned content. In other words, what other websites say about your brand can matter just as much as what you say about yourself.

That changes how you should value a placement without a backlink. A link can still send referral traffic and support SEO. But an unlinked mention can put your brand, product category, and positioning on a third-party page that may later surface in AI search.

So don't write off an earned mention just because it didn't come with a backlink. The coverage itself is an asset.

PR used to worry about what journalists said about the brand. SEO worried about what appeared on the website and in search results. AI search now pulls these two functions much closer together.

Say your team consistently pitches the company as an "AI-powered media monitoring tool," while the website calls it a "unified media, social, and consumer intelligence platform." That is where PR, SEO, and content marketing need to coordinate.

Agree on the exact phrases used to describe your product, your category, and your key differentiators, then use them consistently across press materials, bylines, and owned pages. Earned media that supports GEO depends more on this consistency than on coverage volume.

Joint citation tracking. PR and marketing should both be tracking where the brand appears in AI answers, how it is described, and which sources those answers cite. Otherwise, one team may be celebrating coverage while the other has no idea whether it is showing up in AI search.
