Every generation has its moment in the sun when the fashion, music, and slang that define it are at the cutting edge of popular culture. On the flip side, every generation transitions from youth to adulthood, and the latest cultural trends no longer start and end with them. For millennials, the generation born between 1981 and 1996, that time is now, and members of Gen Z, the generation born between 1997 and 2012, are taking notice. 

Over the past few years, Gen-Zers have used social media to identify the many things millennials do, particularly online, that now feel out of touch. They’ve even coined a catchall phrase for those behaviors: millennial cringe. 

In 2023, conversations about millennial cringe became even more mainstream. Gen-Zers continued finding new examples of it (perhaps in response to seeing their own irrelevance on the horizon as Generation Alpha comes online), and millennials and news media kept catching on.

We used our AI-powered social listening and analytics platform to take a closer look at the millennial cringe conversation from November 2022 through October 2023. Here’s what marketers can learn from it.

In a nutshell, millennial cringe refers to anything millennials do that inspires second-hand embarrassment in younger people. Take, for example, the millennial pause, i.e. the moment 30-somethings and older take before speaking in a recorded video. There’s also millennial humor, which younger people skewer as being overly self-critical with lots of references to defining pop culture phenomena like The Office, Friends, or Harry Potter.

When we zoom out, however, millennial cringe really refers to one generation’s shift in digital literacy. Many people have noted that examples of millennial cringe are artifacts of an online era gone by, with the millennial pause coming from a time when video recording on apps like Snapchat and Instagram had a slight delay. And as Vox points out, internet humor was once sillier, more earnest, and more accessible. Today, it is much more ironic, driven by algorithms, and most importantly, quickly evolving. Inevitably, though, that style of digital communication will also make us roll our eyes. 

For marketers, understanding phenomena like millennial cringe is really about tracking the way communication and meaning are evolving online. 

How much are people talking about millennial cringe?

From November 1, 2022, to October 31, 2023, there was a 119% increase in mentions of millennials and cringiness compared to the 12 months prior (period over period, or PoP). It saw its highest peak on July 19, when Yahoo! Lifestyle picked up this article about cringey millennial interior design trends, pushing its potential reach up to 8.35 million. 

The second highest peak came on September 19, when dating app Plenty of Fish’s survey about what millennials and Gen-Zers think is cringe in dating was publicized in more than 280 news stories, including one in Yahoo! Finance with a potential reach of about 46 million people.

Marketers take note: Plenty of Fish’s survey was a great example of a brand hopping on a relevant cultural trend in a creative, identity-building way. In the process, it took the opportunity to learn more about its audience’s attitudes and preferences.

On Twitter, where the most represented age group is 25-34, about 13,700 unique authors are posting about millennial cringe. According to demographics inferred from their bios, most of them are Gen-Zers and millennials, with relatively equal representation between men and women.

We analyzed conversations specifically about the millennial pause from November 2022 through October 2023. In that time, mentions of it increased by 432% PoP.

The conversation’s biggest spike came on March 17, thanks to a Reddit discussion on the topic that potentially reached 31 million people.

Mentions of millennial humor increased by 274% PoP, making it an even hotter topic than the millennial pause.

The millennial cringe conversation can tell marketers a lot about how to approach consumer intelligence, but here are a few major points:

Conversations about audience segments can reveal how they perceive themselves: Really, most people talking about millennial cringe are Gen-Zers and the millennials themselves. Those mentions are shedding light on how these age groups are thinking about their changing places in the wider landscape of current pop culture.

You can let general themes point you to specifics: Analyzing conversations about general topics at scale can help you pinpoint the uniting emotions or concerns behind them. In the case of millennial cringe, that concern is, at its simplest, anxiety about keeping up with the times.

Find your opening: Not every brand or company’s identity gels with the emotions or concerns at the heart of every social trend. Examining them closely helps you understand which ones are opportunities for your brand to get involved and which ones are best to let pass by.

Millennial Cringe: What it is, who's talking about it, and what it tells marketers

“Was this blog written by an AI chatbot?” A year ago, this question probably wouldn’t have crossed your mind, but in 2023, talk about the potential and possibilities of generative AI technology is all around us. 

Chatbots, and their abilities to generate content and answer questions, have especially taken the world by storm, but to what degree? We used our AI-powered social listening platform to learn more about how people have been talking about the rise of AI chatbots this year. (And, for the record, this blog was researched and written by humans!)

What are AI chatbots, and why are people talking about them?

In general, chatbots are computer programs that simulate digital conversations by responding to text inputs. Digital assistants from Microsoft Word’s Clippy to Amazon’s Alexa have incorporated different iterations of chatbot technology over the years, but recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLM) have taken the tools to a whole new level. 

The most well-known AI chatbot is ChatGPT, created by OpenAI. Its release on November 30, 2022, kicked off the tech world race to create the best generative AI LLM tool. Since then, a handful of competitors have entered the field, including Bard by Google, Bing Chat by Microsoft, Llama by Meta, and Claude by Anthropic.

AI chatbots have seemingly captured the world’s attention because of their potential to revolutionize certain aspects of different industries and people’s everyday lives. So far, some of their biggest impacts have been in education, finance, and medicine, where they have been used to automate everything from writing school reports to picking stocks to answering patient questions.

Mentions of AI chatbots increased by nearly 440% PoP.

From January 1 to October 31, there were more than 1.2 million mentions of AI chatbots in general (i.e., mentions of “AI chatbots”, “chat AI”, and related keywords, not mentions of individual branded tools). This was up about 440% from 224,000 mentions over the prior 10 months.

Notably, the conversation volume peaked on February 8, two days after Google announced Bard, its ChatGPT competitor, when word spread that a Bard ad included incorrect information. The chatbot conversation peaked again on May 10 after Wendy’s announced plans to test an AI chatbot called FreshAI in its drive-thrus. 

The themes of these peaks — how AI chatbot tools compare to one another and their unexpected potential uses — were common in other popular AI chatbot stories of 2023, which included an article comparing ChatGPT to Bing, coverage of a church service generated by ChatGPT, and an article about how Nasdaq engineers are experimenting with the technology. 

Like ChatGPT and its competitors, our social listening platform uses LLM, as well as natural language processing (NLP), to analyze and understand textual data. This technology powers features like our platform’s content clusters and sentiment analysis, which shows that, overall, there were about as many positive mentions of AI chatbots as there were negative ones.

ChatGPT is the most talked about AI chatbot.

And it’s not even close. Since January 1, ChatGPT’s share of voice has consistently dwarfed that of all of its competitors, racking up more mentions than all of them combined.

The volume of the ChatGPT conversation shows, in part, the benefit of being first off the blocks. Bard and Bing Chat are fighting it out for second place, but both have a long way to go to catch up to the OpenAI chatbot's visibility online and off. At this point, ChatGPT is on its way to becoming the generic term for the general tool, similar to Kleenex for facial tissues or Google for online search.

Mentions of ChatGPT grew by nearly 1160% PoP.

From January 1 through October 31, there were nearly 9 million mentions of ChatGPT across English-language news and social sources — an almost 1160% increase from 711,000 mentions during the 10 months prior. Conversations about ChatGPT took off in the first half of 2023, but seem to have leveled off since late July. 

Similar to the general AI chatbot conversation, the ChatGPT conversation has been spurred on by discussion about its competitors and how it can potentially be used. One top story about the tool was an April 17 Reuters article about Elon Musk’s launch of his own rival chatbot, TruthGPT. That article was posted, shared, and reshared on social media over 62,400 times. Meanwhile, an April open call for comment from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce was posted, shared, and reshared on social media over 54,100 times.

Men dominate the AI chatbot conversation on Twitter. 

This gender skew was consistent across all of the conversations about individual AI chatbots that we analyzed. It may be attributable to the fact that Twitter has more male users than female users.

However, it may also partially reflect who is actually using these tools. A recent survey of 5,600 professionals found that 54% of male respondents use AI tools compared to 35% of female respondents.

At this time next year, the AI chatbot conversation will look radically different as the technology advances, people discover new uses for it, and new regulations and standards develop in response. By then, marketers everywhere should have asked themselves important questions about if and how they will incorporate AI chatbots into their work as well as the ethical and other considerations that go along with it. For marketers in industries that are still beginning to incorporate generative AI, now is the time to tap into people’s fascination with the tool.

Why 2023 was the year of AI chatbots

Competitive businesses operate with an eye on what’s next, tapping into rising trends to better understand the future. But trend forecasting is downright impossible without first knowing that a trend is there. Enter trend detection, every successful organization’s strategic secret weapon.

New to the particulars of trend detection? Let this be your guide. In this blog, we’ll take a look at what trend detection is, how it’s done, and how algorithms make it more sophisticated than ever before. 

Using trend detection algorithms to solve business problems

Trends are shifts in patterns that develop in a particular direction. They can increase, decrease, or move horizontally.

You’ve most likely heard the word trend used to talk about temporary shifts in cultural preferences or behaviors, like fashion trends, marketing trends, social media trends, PR trends, Instagram trends, etc. Think bell bottoms in the 1960s or acid-wash jeans in the 1980s. However, trends can more broadly refer to patterns or shifts in sets of data, such as those gained via social listening, and they aren’t necessarily temporary. 

In business, organizations analyze data trends to extract information about what may happen in the future. Detection is the first step in understanding and analyzing trends.

There are many kinds of trends in data, but some of the common trend lines are:

Linear, which increase or decrease steadily

Exponential, which increase or decrease dramatically

Seasonal or cyclical, which develop in a pattern or on a particular, repeating timeline

Additionally, trends come in different magnitudes, from microtrends (like the short-lived cottagecore aesthetic) to megatrends (like the post-World War II baby boom or the rise of AI technology). They can also be at different stages of development, such as emerging or declining trends. The way trends are categorized, in business and beyond, depends on context and objective.

What is trend detection? Before you can analyze a trend you have to detect it to know that it is there.

Trend detection refers to the process of identifying those patterns, shifts, and developments.

In some cases, trends are so dramatic that detecting them is simple. Often, however, trend detection takes much closer examination and analysis.

In business, trend detection is the first step in trend analysis, in which organizations work to understand shifts. They may want to detect trends, like a particular product becoming more popular or growing customer service complaints on social media, so they can make better business decisions moving forward.

Organizations that don’t actively detect trends will, sooner than later, be negatively caught by surprise. They’re unable to keep up with evolving business demands and economic forces as a result. 

In general, there are two main trend detection methods:

Trend detection can take many forms, but in general, they look at deviations from regular data patterns. These deviations can include:

Ramp-ups or -downs, in which data trends up or down over a sustained period (like the initial rise or drop of a roller coaster)

Abrupt shifts, in which data goes from one steady trend line to another, maintaining that new value over a sustained period of time (like the abrupt rise or drop of a plateau)

Pulses or dips, in which the data values increase or decrease significantly before going back to the original value (like the heartbeat lines on an EKG machine screen)

These and other types of deviations and anomalies can point to emerging, or past, trends.

Methods of detecting trends range from manual to automated, but all rely on careful, complete, and accurate data collection and reporting.

The most basic way to detect trends is with a visual analysis.

For example, someone looking at an energy usage bar graph on their electric bills over three years may notice seasonal trends. The bar graph of their monthly usage may go up in summer when they use their air conditioner more, and down in winter when they use it less. This basic method may work well for situations like analyzing personal finances, but it becomes much more prone to error for larger, more complex data sets used in business, such as examining sales, media exposure, or social engagement over longer and more segmented periods of time. 

One more advanced method of trend detection involves statistical analyses, which use complex mathematical equations and models to detect anomalies in data patterns. They find these anomalies in numerical values, such as percentiles, averages, and means. Those statistical analyses can then be used to create projections of what future data values might look like. Scientists have long used statistical analyses to predict things like extreme weather events and global warming.

And while statistical analyses, when done right, can produce reliable insights, they are still manual processes that aren’t always feasible in business operations. Instead, organizations can use algorithms to detect data anomalies and trends for them.

Trend detection algorithms are tools for automating and refining the process of identifying data trends.

Commonly used via other complex systems or technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Natural Language Learning (NLL), trend detection algorithms often operate within platforms and software that present the results in easy-to-understand formats.
