Instagram Video, previously called IGTV or Instagram TV, is a feature that lets users and creators share long-form videos on the app. While videos on the Instagram feed are limited to a maximum of 90 seconds, or 15 seconds if they are eligible for ads, Instagram Videos can be up to 60 minutes long.

There was once a standalone IGTV app for Android and iOS (which is no longer available in the App Store), but now Instagram Video is part of the main Instagram platform. This lets creators share long-form video content that doesn't require audiences to leave the app to see them on competing channels and apps like YouTube.

In 2021, Instagram combined Feed Video, which let users share videos to the main app feed, and IGTV to create Instagram Video. A short while after, the company stopped supporting the IGTV app. 

For brands, marketers, and creators, video content opens up new opportunities to enhance their social media marketing strategies. Instagram Videos offer many of the same benefits of long-form video content but with a more streamlined, social media experience for the viewer. Here are a few benefits that you stand to gain from Instagram Video: 

Increased visibility for products and services

In 2020, nine out of 10 Instagram users watched videos on the platform every week. And since the 2021 announcement from Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, stating that the platform would be focusing more on video content, the Instagram algorithm has favored video content, making it a great way to increase the visibility of your profile, content, products, and services. 

Video previews in the main feed draw plenty of eyes to the Instagram Video itself. According to Social Media Examiner, brands like Sephora went from getting 60,000–80,000 views on their IGTV channel videos to over 1 million views almost overnight after they started showing IGTV previews in their feed. 

Video content is one of the keys to keeping your audience engaged with your brand. The more creative your Instagram Video is, the higher the chances of getting likes, comments, and shares. On YouTube, there are three video content types that tend to do well on the platform and will also work on the Instagram app:

Creating videos like this for Instagram Video can get you great engagement and help new consumers discover your brand. It's the perfect place for longer, more detailed content; save the short videos for your Reels or TikTok and Snapchat channels.  

What Are the Instagram Video and IGTV dimensions?

When uploading a video to Instagram Video, make sure it meets these specifications and requirements:

Length: Videos that are 10 minutes or less have a maximum file size of 650MB. Videos that are between 10 minutes and 60 minutes (the maximum length long) must have a file size that is 3.6GB or less. 

Recommended cover photo size: 420px by 654px or 1:1.55 ratio

The IGTV dimensions, for both horizontal and vertical video, were the following: 

Length: 15 minutes (maximum) when uploading via mobile and up to 60 minutes when uploading from desktop

Aspect ratio: 9:16 (vertical or portrait) or 16:9 (horizontal or landscape)

You can't make content for IGTV since Instagram got rid of the IGTV tab in 2021 and stopped supporting the standalone app in early 2022.

Here's a step-by-step guide to uploading an Instagram Video.

Find it just to the right of center at the top of the home screen. 

Choose a video from your device's library or record one on the spot by tapping the camera icon. Then, tap 'Next'. You'll find it on the top right part of your screen.

Add a filter to your video by tapping the one you want from the choices at the bottom of your screen. You can also edit the length of your video by selecting the 'Trim' option and using the sliders to change where it begins and ends. When you're done, select 'Next'.

You can add a cover image to your video using the  button and choosing a picture in your device's library. Then select 'Done'. At this stage, you can add a caption, tag other accounts, add a location, or add the video to a series. 

If your video doesn't have captions, tap 'Advanced settings' to turn auto-generated captions on. This is also where you can edit how your video cover photo shows up on your grid and turn commenting on and off.

After you tap 'Share' the video will show up on your followers' Feeds as a preview showing the first 60 seconds. They have to tap 'Keep watching' to see the rest. If you have a Facebook account linked to your Instagram profile, you can also share your video there.  

As always, the length of your video will depend on its subject and what you're making it for. Instagram Videos can be up to one hour long, but in most cases, unless your viewer is on a long flight, they probably won't watch at a single piece of content on their mobile device for that long.

The platform itself recommends that Instagram creators make videos that are short and entertaining. But if your video is 60 seconds or shorter, you could make a Reel. There's no tried and true Instagram Video length, but always trim unnecessary parts wherever you can.

Great Examples of Brands Using Long-form Video

Netflix uploaded an hour-long video promoting the new series of Riverdale. The video showed Riverdale star Cole Sprouse eating a cheeseburger. Yep, that’s it, a full 60 minutes just eating a cheeseburger…

The video is actually weirdly hypnotizing. A close up on Cole’s face, while he’s making eyes at the camera, makes it impossible to look away. A staggering 1M+ people have viewed the video since it was posted!

If the sensual burger eating didn’t do it for you, then BuzzFeed might have something more up your alley. BuzzFeed decided that a game of hamster football was the only thing worthy of their first post on this new platform. 

Frustrating and yet addicting, you can’t look away as these hamsters slowly scurry across the pitch coming close to the goals posts but very rarely scoring. We can all take a lesson from this narrative — when in doubt, use cute animals.

Rather than creating new content, Gucci decided to repurpose old content on IGTV. They went back through their archives and uploaded every runway presentation since 2015. The videos have gained over 400,000 views in total and help reinforce a love for the brand and reinforced their stance as a thought leader by showcasing how they have shaped the fashion industry and trends.

As you would expect from NatGeo, they took things a bit more seriously and delivered content in a more traditional TV format. They uploaded an episode of ‘One Strange Rock,’ an award-winning TV show from filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. The video was re-edited for the new vertical format and has already gained 1.32 million views.

To raise awareness for their new Worn Wear campaign, Patagonia created a long-form video showing multiple stories from various Patagonia customers. Each had a piece of Patagonia clothing that they had held onto for many years, creating sentimental value. The video resonated with their audience and connected with them on a personal level. The longer length of the video gave Patagonia a more effective way to tell these customer stories, going into more detail and holding their audience’s attention.

So you've created your Instagram Video and published it to your account, but how do you get more views? Here are a few methods to try to boost that exposure.

Instagram is one of the few video platforms where the more hashtags you have, the better if you want your video content to be seen and discovered. To increase the visibility of your Instagram Video, use hashtags within the description. This will help make your video discoverable to non-followers as well as your usual Instagram audience.

When it comes to long-form video content, the key to getting views (as well as retaining the attention of your audience) lies in those first few seconds. Instagram Stories and Reels have proven how there's success in grabbing your audience's attention with short-form content; you'll need to apply this idea to the first 15-30 seconds of your video if you want to hook your audience and give them something to keep watching.

To draw even more attention to your video, share it to your Instagram Story. Just keep in mind that Stories chops Instagram Videos up in 15-second chapters. This is not ideal for videos that are on the longer side.

Make use of the other online platforms that you have a presence on to share your Instagram Video and get more views. Cross-posting to your Facebook account or Facebook Business Page, add the link to the video in a tweet, or embed it in a blog post.

When I started reading up about social ROI, I found it so confusing. I wondered how other business leaders understood what influences the ROI of their campaigns and how they went about measure success. I’ll be the first to admit, I don’t do great with numbers or formulae. But I also noticed that when discussing social media measurement, most experts had substituted simplicity and comprehension for thoroughness and over-complication. That was when I decided to make sense of this topic.

In this article, I simplify the steps to measuring social media ROI and discuss the role consumer insights play in helping brands reach new heights with their campaigns.

How Consumer Insights Enhance Social Media ROI

How to calculate the ROI of social media marketing

As Lewis Carroll (and later, George Harrison) so famously stated, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” If you’re running a social media campaign without taking the time to use an analytics tool to both better understand your audience and assess if you’re getting the results you want to achieve, then you really don’t know where you’re going.

Social ROI matters because it tells you where you are, where you want to go and where you should be heading if you want your marketing campaign to work. Otherwise, you might as well be chucking all that time, effort, and money down a very deep well. 

The way consumers research, discover, and purchase products has changed dramatically over the past two decades. First, widespread adoption of the internet changed the way we buy, and then the advent of smartphones accelerated this disruption further. While marketers were still trying to make sense of this changing world, the global pandemic of 2020 turned everything on its head once more. 

Marketers around the world all face the same question now; what do consumers want? 

The world seems to change too fast for any of us to keep up, and trying to figure out how to capture the attention of customers in a noisy world can feel impossible. This is the problem that consumer insights aims to solve, answering fundamental questions such as: 

Do different communities or segments exist within my target audience? 

While similar, consumer insights and social listening are not the same things. 

Consumer insights go a step further than social listening and add qualitative analysis into the mix, trying to understand what exactly the results mean and what they can tell us about consumers. For example, social listening might tell us that from October to February people talk more about Scotch whisky on social media. On the contrary, consumer insights tell us that people enjoy whisky for its warming quality during the cold winter months and that they’re also interested in finding new whisky cocktail recipes. Armed with this social media data, brands can build more relevant and personalized messages that are more likely to appeal to consumers, increasing sales as a result. 

Consumer Insights platforms like Meltwater also enable marketers to identify new revenue streams by better understanding the Tribes that make up their audiences. Tribes refer to communities of like-minded individuals within a broader audience, who have more in common than demographics. They could have similarities in a number of different ways such as the media they consume, influencers they follow, brands they purchase, online conversations they participate in, the content they share, social channels they use, and more. Understanding all of this can help you to target campaigns at your tribes more effectively. If your business has been trying to make sense of calculating the ROI of social media marketing, here’s where you should start.

The first step towards calculating the ROI of social media marketing is to decide where you want to go AKA, what are your goals and business objectives? What do you want to ultimately achieve through your social media campaign? For instance, you can choose to focus on one or more of the following goals:

Increasing brand reach and visibility online

Enhancing reputation as an expert and positioning your brand as a thought-leadership

The social media campaign that you decide to run will ultimately depend on your goals. For example, if you decide to go after leads, you will have to create a lead magnet – an incentive for which your prospects will share their email address or phone number with you. If you go down this route, you may wish to invest in doing some primary research and use the insights you find as gated lead gen content. Or, you may choose to run a Twitter card campaign or a Facebook ad campaign to generate leads from these two channels immediately, while creating a blog as a long-term campaign to generate leads from organic traffic.

If you decide to go after sales on your eCommerce website, Facebook carousel ads might be the best option for short-term sales and app downloads a more long-term plan to deliver content right to the buyer’s mobile devices.

As mentioned above, you also need to customize your social media campaign based on consumer insights. Once you understand where your audience is hanging out, you can narrow down the type of content you need to be creating. For instance, images will do best on Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. If your demographic is largely a B2B audience that is active on LinkedIn and Slideshare, you will have to rethink your creatives and campaign.

Gone are the days when you had to wander blindly around the social media landscape, trying to figure out which posts are working best, or use the “Post and Pray” method of sharing content.

The wonderful thing about online marketing is that you can measure almost everything. From the content that works best on social media, to the path your visitors take through your website, to signups, leads, sales, and follow-up! Everything can be monitored, measured, and customized to optimize the customer experience.

If you’re using a CRM like Hubspot’s Inbound Marketing Software, you can customize and track your entire visitor experience. In fact, most good marketing CRM systems will have the option of using APIs to connect your social media analytics tool with your internal CRM data. This allows you to measure 'moments that matter' touchpoints along the customer journey making it easier than ever to spot patterns where prospects fall off the journey and fail to convert. With this knowledge, you can create campaigns and track which ones are working and which aren’t so that you can put your time, effort, and money into the social media campaigns that are getting the results you want.

What does social media return on investment (ROI) mean to you? Calculating ROI is ultimately about measuring the cost of a lead or sale and deciding if your marketing expenses were worth it. Only you can decide whether the ROI in social media campaigns was worth it to you.

There are a lot of social media monitoring tools, methodologies, and complicated formulae to calculate social media ROI, but the only one that actually makes sense is to ask yourself whether it was worth spending $5 on a Facebook ad to gain a lead that went on to convert to hundreds of dollars worth of sales on your website.

It’s up to you to decide what social media marketing campaigns make sense to spend on and what you can pass on. 

When measuring ROI, don’t forget to factor in the cost of your social media marketing agency or, if you’re doing it in-house, the salaries, time, expense, and effort it takes to go from point A to point B.

Once you have calculated your social media marketing ROI, it’s time to analyze your results using a social analytics tool, assess if they are taking you where you want to go, and tweak and fine-tune your campaigns to take you on a trajectory to social media success. 

It's a good idea to benchmark your results against a different period, usually, brands do this on a quarterly basis. This helps them see where they've moved the needle with their social media efforts. You can do this for your competitors too, if you decide to benchmark against your competitors, social media share of voice is a key social metric to use.

Did you know that Facebook's algorithm, known as EdgeRank, impacts what will appear on a user's News Feed? Yes, the content shared on your Facebook Page is susceptible to this algorithm, which means that as marketers, you might want to pay attention to how the Facebook algorithm affects the reach of your content. 

But how exactly does EdgeRank affect Facebook Recommendations? Firstly, EdgeRank is calculated based on the below formula:

EdgeRank = Affinity (the interaction between a Facebook user and a brand) x Weight (the importance of that action e.g. Like or Comment) x Recency (how long ago the edge was created).

Knowing the components EdgeRank uses to determine what type of content to display to users, it's clear that recommendation could impact both your Affinity and Weight score. A low or high score based on the volume of interaction the recommendation generated can determine the overall visibility of your Facebook Page and the organic reach of the content you share on your Facebook page.

Recommendations make your business more discoverable across the Facebook platform when people are searching for, or talking, about your business. One of the best advantages of Recommendations is that Facebook will first show the recommendations provided by your closest friends or users, which can have a positive impact on the purchasing decisions of other customers. As Facebook Recommendations encourage other customers to rate your business, the opinions of others build brand transparency and increases trust in your business altogether. 

The reviews and recommendations that users post on social media platforms are also very important for any business’s online reputation.

According to Facebook, only Business Pages that allow Facebook Recommendations will show a rating, and a Business Page may not have a rating if the Page has not received enough Recommendations. 

However, when a customer recommends a business, they have the option to choose which audience to share that recommendation with. So, if a Facebook user posts a recommendation and selects 'Friends' as the audience who can see that recommendation, then only their Facebook friends are able to see it; you won't. It is only the recommendations that have been posted for the 'Public' to see, will it appear for everyone to view and this will be included in your own Business Page's overall rating. 

If you discover a negative recommendation or review on your page, unfortunately, you cannot delete it (or at least, you cannot delete individual reviews). The platform doesn't allow you to delete a Facebook Review the way you can delete comments or content. Instead, you would have to report the review or recommendation that does not meet Facebook's Community Standards. 

You can enable reviews by going to Facebook Recommendations under Facebook Business Page settings. 

Note: This section replaced the Reviews tab, which consisted of only ratings and comments. Additionally, Facebook users no longer give a simple rating. Instead, they click on either the “recommend” or “don’t recommend” button and give extra information, with the added possibility of attaching text and photos, allowing for customers to create more in-depth Facebook reviews. 

The changes that Facebook made in its reviews system to allow users to post recommendations, provided more options for customers to give their thoughts and opinions about the businesses that they purchased from. Recommendations act as a personal endorsement from your customers, and so when you get recommended by customers on public platforms, like Facebook, these recommendations will also appear on your own Facebook Business Page.  

Any user with a Facebook account can publish a recommendation on your Facebook Business Page, as long as you have actually enabled Recommendations on your Page. 

To do this, follow the simple steps below:

Click 'Page Settings' in the bottom left of your Facebook Page

Click 'Templates and Tabs' in the left menu of your 'Settings'

Click to the right of 'Reviews' to turn the tab on

Once recommendations have been enabled, you want to ensure that you keep an eye out for any new reviews. Just like how actively responding to your customer's comments on your content is important for engagement, responding to any Facebook Recommendations is important for maintaining a strong brand reputation online thought online reputation management. You don't need to reply with lengthy replies but be thoughtful. This will show customers that you value their reviews. You also increase engagement and boost your EdgeRank.

1. Click 'Settings' at the bottom left of your Facebook Page
