Meet Time to Change

Time to Change

Time to Change is a growing movement of people challenging how we think and act about mental health problems. The movement was formed by mental health charities MIND and Rethink Mental Illness with the aim of ensuring everyone with a mental health problem is free of fear and has equal opportunities in all areas of life. Time to Change do this through three overarching objectives: empowerment, sustainability and digital storytelling.

The Challenge

Finding and creating content

In order to connect with our audience, we have to evoke emotions and storytelling is a great way to do so. With so many brands and organisations telling stories, Time to Change were unsure how to make theirs stand out and resonate. They decided that being honest, raw and real about the messages they told, as well as who tells them, is the best option.
User-generated content then became a massive focus of the campaign.

“Before Meltwater, ensuring we had enough content was a struggle. There are so many unsung heroes out there with great wisdom to share that it made sense to make use of this content in our own strategy.” Finding those community members is the difficult part, especially without the right tools in place to guide the way. “We’re interested in blogs written by people with mental health problems that would typically appear on the 25th page of Google, for example. Only, by the time you get to this page section of Google, the search results are mostly spam sites and, typically, unrecognised blogs become hidden in the digital noise.” Time to Change needed support discovering community members who were a part of their movement but about whom they weren’t yet aware, in order to recognise and praise them, as well as improve their content strategy.

“One of our main objectives is to create a sustainable movement. We hope Time to Change isn’t around for a long period of time as this means we have been successful in what we’ve set out to do - create an environment without stigma or discrimination.” Since changing attitudes and perceptions is such a large part of the movement, Time to Change must be able to report back on developments. “Reading every social media post is impossible.” Time to Change needed a super human pair of eyes that saw and understood online buzz.

The Solution

Understanding what's resonating

Time to Change use Meltwater, global leaders in online media intelligence to build relationships with their audience. “Meltwater’s social media monitoring tool has a brilliant catalogue of blog sources that we use for content marketing purposes. It’s so extensive that they are able to track a blog created last week by somebody with little influence compared to other bloggers. The more we can find, the more we can share, helping us create a stronger content marketing strategy!”

The strategy Time to Change follow is a good way to increase audience size by connecting with members that may not be familiar with the cause. “Once we find members using social listening, we celebrate them and form partnerships.” Time to Change utilises user-generated content twice a week. “User-generated content is very influential in our strategy as it rewards community members and also gives us direction and quality content to share.”

Time to Change use social media analytics to understand which messages are resonating. By doing so they’re able to predict the amount of reach and engagement their campaigns will have. “We use Meltwater to benchmark our successes and understand trends. The social media monitoring tool helps us make sense of social conversations. For example, what encourages our audience to share messages? It also enables us to understand whether we’ve been successful in changing attitudes and perceptions.”
