Social Analysis: Fidget Spinners

In January 2017, barely anyone knew what a fidget spinner was. Most fidgeters would resort to either clicking re-tractable pens or flipping them through their fingers, while others would twirl their hair and bite their nails to stay busy. The nature of fidgeting is nothing new. In fact, most of us have heard our parents plead with us, “STOP FIDGETING”.

Let’s take a look at the social life of these fidget spinners to see when and why they became so popular. According an article from The Guardian on May 5, Catherine Hettinger created her first patent on the spinner in 1993, but due to a lapse on the patents she’s getting no credit for the popular stress relieving fidget toy. Before these toys spun into notoriety, they were used by kids with attention disorders and autism.

We used Sysomos Search to look at the spike in social mentions of the fidget spinner between March and May of 2017. Prior to March, there were only a few hundred mentions of the dazzling spinner. When searching all social sources, a small spike in mentions occurred March 24. Of the 18.9k mentions on that particular day, 18.5k of those were from Twitter. What’s interesting is that the fidget spinner doesn’t start soaring until 40 days later, on May 3.

The mentions of the fidget spinner go from 23.6k on May 3 to 143.2k mentions on May 13. Between March 22 and May 22 there were 1.8 million mentions for fidget spinners, of which Twitter dominated 89.2% of those mentions. These spinners rose to new heights of popularity, almost as quickly as Ronald Miller in the 1980’s classic, Can’t Buy Me Love.

Looking at all sources, it’s important to highlight the overall sentiment. Facebook presents an overwhelmingly positive sentiment towards fidget spinners, while Tumblr shows an exceptionally negative stance toward them. Taking into account the positive and negative mentions of a sample size of 5k mentions across all sources, the overall sentiment is 67% negative, when setting aside neutral posts. If this sentiment holds, it’s uncertain if the popularity of fidget spinners will maintain.

Since Twitter represents over 89% of fidget spinner mentions between March and May, we dug into the Twitter results to pinpoint the top sources who were talking about the fidget spinners. From the below chart you can see that CNN en Español and Mashable were two of the top sources. Additionally, the demographics show that folks in California and Texas were a bit more vocal on social about the fidget spinners than people from any other state. This is rather interesting when looking at CNN en Español being the top source and people from two states that border Mexico talking about it the most.

We all love emojis; why not let these little images do some explaining for us? Below is a list of the top emojis used on Twitter when fidget spinners were mentioned. The top emoji sums up the fact that fidget spinners are hot, but the real question is when will they burn out? There are new toys waiting to spin or flip into the trendy bright light.

Teaching Modern PR to Students

One of the challenging parts of teaching modern PR and social media is the fact the industry, along with the tools and specific channels, are constantly changing. Young public relations professionals are being asked to be experts overnight; skilled in the areas of monitoring, content creation, storytelling, and influencer relations. As a professor, it’s a challenge to keep up with the fast pace we are seeing in the industry.

With that being said, there are exercises to help prepare students for the workplace. There are a few assignments that I’ve given over the years at the University of Louisville that have been very well received, assignments that tie in both analytics as well as core principles in PR.

Personal Branding Audit

One of the challenges I hear from colleagues is the lack of access to business or client accounts on social media for their students to analyze for class. There’s a simple response to this: You already have access to social media business and client accounts, and that is your personal brand. One of my favorite projects to assign is to have students reflect on their personal brand, using metrics and platform analytics to evaluate their personal social media strategy.

The overall goal is to teach the students the importance of online presentation but it uses the audit of their social media accounts to reflect on how these tools can lead to professional opportunities or help foster relationships. Throughout this project, students use data analytics to evaluate the impact of their posts and where they stand in their communities of choice. It also helps them pinpoint their strengths and degree of influence. Students need to know where they currently stand online based on their overall presence, but also where they need to go. As they progress in their studies, they need to know how to build relationships with fellow professionals and brands, create content to engage influencers with, and be able to evaluate the effectiveness of certain types of updates and future content.

Situational Analysis Listening and Monitoring Audit of Client and Competitors

In order to be able to create great content for PR, we have to be able to determine the overall health and stability of our networks. We need to be able to answer questions about how well our content is performing, who are our biggest advocates, and both what and how competitors are doing on social media.

This is where benchmarking a brand and their competitors are very important. In my social media class this past spring, we had a chance to do this with Sysomos. Some of the features of the software are similar to other listening and measurement tools, but it allows students the opportunity to use data to draw conclusions about what is happening. The software highlights major takeaways, gaps to address immediately (e.g. challenges), and opportunities to act on (e.g. create content for influencers and build relationships).

The goal here is to allow students to not only talk about key performance indicators for their PR plan (e.g. engagement, etc…) but to actually calculate it with actionable intel. In a professional setting, they’ll need this knowledge to advise clients on what they need to consider when planning content and how their results can be evaluated.

I plan on adapting this assignment for the Fall 2017 semester with Meltwater for my graduate Public Relations and Crisis Communications class at the University of Louisville.

Buzzfeed Content Creation and Analytics Assignment

I wanted an assignment where students created content and evaluated the response based on data analytics. This is where fellow social media professor, Matt Kushin of Shepherd University shared his Buzzfeed assignment with me.

Students were asked to create a Buzzfeed-style post (this could be a quiz, listicle, or regular post), and then promote the piece of content on social media while also evaluating the associated metrics. I adapted this assignment to have students create content about Louisville with what tourists and others should know about the city before they arrive for the Kentucky Derby. Students had to create a post with additional images (citing them, of course) to tell a story while also providing links to resources such as videos, restaurants, and must go to places in the city.

Essentially, the students created a customized fact sheet about Louisville that was presented and tailored for a Buzzfeed audience. The students also had to decide how they would share this content with the community on social media. Along with outlining steps on how they would measure the success of these posts, and given the outcome, what lessons and action steps to take in the future.

The overall goal of this assignment was to teach students the importance of being able to write strong content relevant to a brand, company, or topic and be able to provide sound metrics that validate their efforts. It was interesting to see the sparks go off when students realized that a platform they have used for years could be adapted for professional opportunities. Seeing this shift in their perspective, using Buzzfeed as passive entertainment to a creative content hub that could resonate with communities, was illuminating.

In summary, there are a lot of great assignments, resources and opportunities out there for PR students and professors to take advantage of. The more opportunities we have to share resources and bounce around ideas, the better off we are going to be in preparing students for the growing expectations we are seeing in the PR field.

There are additional PR assignments listed in my teaching workbook along with rubrics and best practices. If you’re an intern or newbie to public relations, download our ebook to keep on track.

Social Media Recap: May 2017

The last few weeks have been busy for the social media world. Instagram and Snapchat are churning out features at top speed as they battle for dominance, Twitter debuted several new partnerships, including a first-ever concert stream with Live Nation featuring the Zac Brown Band, and Facebook introduced several new features and functionalities PR pros will love. One skill everyone in PR will need for the rest of 2017 is agility. With the rapid rate of product change happening at the same time that a churning news cycle is keeping PR pros on their toes, PR pros that can move quickly and assertively will lead their space.

Instagram Throws Marketers and PR Folks a Bone

Instagram announced that they have finally answered the call of busy marketers and PR pros everywhere this month, allowing you to post pics on Instagram without the app. This is big news, though it is currently limited to the mobile web site, and should help both teams manning a single account and people in low-cell-service areas to be more active. Instagram also took a swipe at rival app Snapchat, adding face filters right in the camera, clickable hashtag stickers, new Boomerang and Rewind functionality, an eraser, and more fun tools.

Snapchat Increases Geofilter Options

Snapchat now offers brands more ways to buy geofilters that layer text, graphics, and other fun images over user generated content. Additionally, Snapchat is offering new ways to create geofilters for one-time events, partnering with event planners like WeddingWire and Eventfarm. This gives PR pros more options for serving clients who are active on social media during live events.

Twitter Doubles Down on Live Video

As we mentioned in March, Twitter continues to capitalize on live media and have announced additional new streaming partners. These 16 new partners include sports, news, and entertainment. The first stream, featuring the Zac Brown Band, was a smashing success. It was made doubly so by the live stream polling by Live Nation, actively seeking out users’ needs and wants for future streams in real time. The quality of the sound and video in the Twitter live streams has been consistently amazing. Savvy, pop-focused PR pros and their brands would do well to time Twitter participation and ad buys around relevant streams, and do so in a way that feels organic and that doesn’t hijack the stream.

Facebook is continuing to try to be everyone’s everything. Relevant for PR clients, Facebook is testing video as page cover photos. This can be a fun way for brands to leverage additional video for PR campaigns. Challenging for PR pros is another change to the algorithm: reducing links to low-quality web pages. This is overdue move should help fight the spread of false news stories. However, PR pros should make sure their brand pages are fully updated and not being flagged as spam, misinformation, or any other offending category to ensure they continue to be seen by fans.

Additional PR Platforms

One platform that we think PR pros should keep an eye on is LinkedIn. Now that they are owned by Microsoft and are changing and tweaking their user interface and features, it’s worth paying attention to the new ways PR can leverage this formerly staid platform. We’re also keeping our eyes on the new paid version of Medium to see if could become a useful outlet for PR pros.

Word of Mouth Marketing Is Important: This Is Why

Influencer, referral, and social media marketing are not synonymous, but they are all key aspects of an old marketing standby, word of mouth marketing (WOMM).

How Does It Fit Together?

WOMM is virtually indistinguishable from organic word-of-mouth, it has the same goal of spreading ideas (or for our purposes, marketing messages). Organic word-of-mouth is when a friend goes to a great restaurant, is excited about their meal, and subsequently raves about the dining experience. Next time you’re looking for a night out, you might consider dining there, especially if you trust your friend (and the restaurant clicks other boxes). It’s a strong recommendation from a trusted source that spurs you to act.

WOMM is similar, but often begins in a corporate communications department. Taking the above example, your friend, a local food writer, is invited to a private meal for bloggers at the same restaurant. While enjoying the meal, she takes pictures of the space, the food, and other bloggers. She also tweets and posts to Instagram, and later, she blogs about the experience. The restaurant’s PR agency, organized the event, created hashtags, and had their own photographer there to take pictures. During the event, you see your friend’s social posts, you click on the hashtag and see other posts by attendees. The plated food looks delicious and the tweets mention how everything hit the spot. To you, as a consumer, this marketing message is processed in the same way as if your friend mentioned it to you in conversation. Official WOMM messengers are chosen with care; their influence is typically cultivated, and they can help you reach a specific marketing demographic or persona. These influencers are often given attractive financial or social incentives to take part in WOMM campaigns.

word of mouth marketing

Is WOMM Important?

WOMM in the form of referral, influencer, or social media marketing is important because it has increasingly shown to make a difference in consumer buying decisions. This year, the Harris Poll and Ambassador found that when considering a purchase, 82% of Americans seek recommendations from friends and family, that number shoots up to 90% for those who are also parents.

Referral, influencer, or social media marketing are all facets of modern day WOMM. We distinguish between them to differentiate between the initial point of message activation. Often you can receive a WOMM message on a social media platform from a friend you follow (referral), a journalist, blogger, or celebrity (influencer), or directly from the brand itself (social media marketing).

word of mouth marketing

Think of Social Media Marketing as Word of Mouth Marketing

  1. Much like a Ponzi-scheme, social media is exponential. Your content has the potential to reach tens of thousands of people with very little effort on your part. With each successful social broadcast, you may have the potential to go viral. If a piece of content hits a social tipping point, your earned media has no price tag.
  2. Friends and fans on social channels often follow people and brands whose ideas they are interested in. This can be platform specific, for example: an insightful writer you follow on Twitter might be a horrible photographer, who only takes pictures of their dog, so you might choose to not follow them on Instagram. They have a private Facebook account, that you can’t publicly see, but they also have a Youtube channel where they review books, and you subscribe to that for their commentary. For you, they might be influential on Twitter or Youtube, but you aren’t part of their community on Instagram or Facebook. So, if they run a WOMM campaign for dog food on Instagram, unless they cross-promote on Twitter or Youtube, you won’t be aware of it. By following a brand/influencer/friend, you invite them into your circle. This gives them an opportunity to make a warm (versus a cold) introduction to a new audience and community.
  3. Even as we de-emphasize the importance of impressions as a metric, they still mean something. According to Salesforce, it takes as many as six different constant and consistent touch points along a customer’s journey to go from first touch to sales lead. So, when community members go to the effort of mentioning you to a friend or sharing your content on their socials, they’re adding other possible converts to your sales funnel.
  4. And coincidentally, the act of proselytizing can push the proselytizer deeper into the funnel as well. Explicitly outlining the positive aspects of a product to a third party can have self-persuasive effects that shouldn’t  be overlooked.
  5. Like most things related to sales conversion, it can be a numbers game. You’ll likely get more clicks on your CTAs if more people read your content. So, getting content out in front of as many eyeballs as possible will, inevitably, increase conversion rate.

Takeaways

Getting the word out through influencer, referral, and social media marketing are essential aspects of any modern day marketing program. But it is only the start. Impressions on messages won’t necessarily convert a community. And business objectives are the end goal. Still, word of mouth marketing messages that are activated and honed will bring the numbers you need, and eventually, some of those eyeballs will be the right ones at the right time.
