Given that the purpose of a stock photography site is ostensibly to provide marketers with imagery for business content, it’s rather jarring to run across so many search results that don’t seem to have any practical application whatsoever.  Our Questionable Stock Photos series was born out of the unsettling discovery that your average stock photo site search leads inevitably to an age-old question: “What were they thinking?”

We may never truly know why a photographer decided that the image of a disgruntled firefighting chameleon would provide some happy marketer with a quality download for a piece of content (beyond this one), but we’ll take a stab at it.

1) Overworked, Overexposed, Abused: STOP Hollywood’s Exploitation of Lizards!  (PETA ad)

2) Chameleons: Hot to Trot and Ready for Action!  (National Geographic Exhibit)

3) Allstate Fire Insurance: as Comprehensive as a Chameleon’s Vision Radius

4) The Secret Life of Cranky Carl: a Chameleon’s Tale  (Children’s Book)

Feel free to submit your own ideas via the blog comments.  And, if you’ve run across a questionable stock photo and would like to share it, please tweet a link to the pic @meltwater with the hashtag #stockpic and we’ll be sure to give it a gander.  If its questionability isn’t in question, we’ll enthusiastically feature it here on the blog.
