Meltwater Acquires Algo to Supercharge its Industry-Leading Media Intelligence Platform

Sixth deal from Meltwater in ongoing M&A spree adds Stanford and Carnegie Mellon data science focused Ph.D.s to team, building AI-driven competitive edge for companies leveraging insights from external data

SYDNEY , ASIA PACIFIC – 30 Aug, 2017Meltwater, a global leader in media intelligence, today announces the acquisition of Algo, a real-time data analytics platform powered by the most advanced machine learning techniques available. The acquisition further strengthens Meltwater’s powerful media analytics and insights platform by bringing on Algo’s patented Velocity of Information engine, which surfaces rising trends from tens of millions of real-time data points. The acquisition also brings Algo’s team of award-winning information Natural Language Processing and information retrieval experts in-house to oversee development of new products.

Founded in 2015 by Matt Michelsen, Aaron Rama and Evon Onusic, Algo leverages machine learning and natural language processing to democratise online semantic data that currently only the tech giants have the infrastructure to support. Its Information Velocity algorithm is the foundation for several patents. It processes one billion data points daily in real-time, determining which information is spreading fastest globally. The Algo app has been massively adopted, with over three million downloads.

“In this day and time we are all drowning in data. Meltwater’s goal is to give our clients access to smart technology that can cut through the clutter and extract critical insights from billions of data points – data points which would be impossible for a human being to make sense of,” said Jorn Lyseggen, CEO of Meltwater. “There is a vast amount of external data that companies today largely overlook containing real-time information about how competitors invest, how they hire, how they spend their ad budget, and how their products are received in the market. Anyone that is thoughtful about mining this information will create a powerful information advantage over their competitors.”

“We’re excited to marry Algo’s infrastructure with Meltwater’s current technology and become the global leader in media intelligence.” said Matt Michelsen, Investor and Co-Founder of Algo. “The opportunity to help grow an international organisation committed to helping its customers gain an unprecedented level of analysis is exciting.”

The team behind Algo is composed of some of the best minds in data science. Adviser Eric Nyberg led development on IBM’s Watson. A PhD and pioneer in Natural Language Processing, Nyberg’s contributions of automatic text translation, information retrieval and automatic question answering have been fundamental to the industry. Nyberg currently leads the Language Technology Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. Rok Sosic, PhD, has also been instrumental in developing Algo, having created the first Linux Grid Cluster, considered the foundation of Grid Computing. Sosic has published 30 academic papers, holds several patents and founded Active Tools, which was acquired by TurboLinux. Matt Michelsen; investor in Palantir, Uber, and many others invested and Co-founded Algo in early 2015 with Rama and Onusic.

“Our platform ingests and analyses data from tens of millions of sources, in over 80 languages –
in real time. Applying Algo’s information velocity engine on top of our existing streams will help us identify anomalies and predict trends in several micro and macro topics that are relevant to our customers,” said Aditya Jami, Senior Director of Engineering & Head of AI at Meltwater.

The acquisition of Algo comes off the heels of several key AI acquisitions for Meltwater, cementing the company’s commitment to developing industry-leading data science and machine learning technology. Meltwater recently acquired Hong Kong-based social big data SaaS solution Klarity. Earlier this year, it acquired Oxford University spinout, Wrapidity, to add AI media monitoring capabilities to Meltwater’s platform, followed by Cosmify, to boost analysis of large data sets. Last year, Meltwater acquired Encore Alerts, a US-based machine learning company.

Founded in 2001 by CEO Jorn Lyseggen with only $15,000, today Meltwater has more than 1,500 employees across 55 offices throughout six continents, and services 50 percent of Fortune 500 companies. Meltwater Acquires Cosmify to Bolster Its Data Analytics Offerings and Machine Learning Engine

The fifth deal in Meltwater’s ongoing M&A streak adds machine-learning, data-science experts to in-house machine learning team

SINGAPORE, August 16th 2017 – Meltwater, a global leader in media intelligence and data analytics, announced the acquisition of Cosmify, a knowledge discovery platform that uses advanced machine learning technology for in-depth analysis of corporate data sets. Cosmify’s technology will help Meltwater’s industry-leading platform intelligently manage the vast amounts of data from multiple sources that businesses need to make competitive decisions based on insights from the outside.

With its fifth acquisition in less than nine months, Meltwater is quickly building on its impressive data science engine aimed at offering the most innovative and dynamic media intelligence platform in the world. With 55 offices throughout six continents, Meltwater employs more than 1,500 employees and 50 percent of Fortune 500 companies use its services to shape business decisions.

“The best business decisions are based on forward-looking data. Today external data on the open internet is one of the most important sources for forward-looking information,” says Jorn Lyseggen, CEO and founder of Meltwater. “Cosmify’s advanced discovery, clustering, and classification capabilities will enhance Meltwater’s ability to connect the dots between a wide range of data types from internal and external data and ultimately help business leaders make more informed decisions.”

Cosmify founder Eugene Ciurana and chairman Bart Swanson launched their first machine learning company, Summly, with 16-year old founder and Oxford student Nick D’Aloisio, and sold it to Yahoo for $30 million in 2013. In 2014, the team, with co-founders Dr. Ana Nelson, Connor Goodwolf, and Sriram Krishnan, launched Cosmify. Bart Swanson of Horizons Ventures, MuleSoft founder Ross Mason, and CA Technologies VP of Engineering Leonid Igolnik are part of the advisory board.

Now, after selling two companies in four years, the team is joining Meltwater’s push to build the largest AI-driven data repository in the world, giving companies a competitive edge by allowing them to leverage insights from external data when making business decisions.

“95% of all data is unstructured and unwieldy, but it also contains a vast trove of unexploited value,” says Eugene Ciurana, CEO and Founder of Cosmify. “Our unsupervised learning system extracts knowledge from internal and external, unstructured data sources like PDFs, free-text, spreadsheets, media files, presentations, cloud drives, calendars, or chat systems – most often hitting on valuable information nuggets that eluded the very users who produced them.”

“Cosmify’s knowledge discovery engine analyses customers’ very large and dynamic data lakes to produce vectorised information, and when fed into our existing Data Science platform, automates generation of highly customised outside insights – all without having to import their internal data into our systems,” says Aditya Jami, Senior Director of Engineering & Head of AI at Meltwater.

The acquisition of Cosmify comes on the heels of several key acquisitions for Meltwater that have broadened its global footprint and cemented the company’s commitment to data science and machine learning. Meltwater recently announced its plans to acquire Canada’s Infomart, followed closely by Hong Kong-based social big data SaaS solution Klarity. Earlier this year, it acquired Oxford University spinout, Wrapidity, to add AI-based crawling to Meltwater’s platform and last year, Meltwater acquired Encore Alerts, a US-based data science driven media monitoring company.

Meltwater is actively seeking investment opportunities and partnerships to continue expanding its media intelligence services globally, with a strong emphasis on data science.

This press release was distributed on 15th August 2017 in San Francisco, California and was featured in Venturebeat.

Meltwater ramps up ANZ ‘Outside Insight’ campaign

SYDNEY, Australia – 28 July, 2015 – Meltwater, a global leader in media intelligence solutions, today announced it is ramping up its A/NZ campaign with the engagement of challenger-brand PR agency Sling & Stone and appointment of an in-house PR Manager for Meltwater, Angely Grecia.

The announcement follows the launch of Meltwater’s next generation media intelligence solution designed to offer meaningful real-time analysis of the billions of conversations happening across the globe. Meltwater’s new media intelligence platform builds upon traditional digital monitoring services and incorporates data science advancements that create actionable insights from analytics.

The new technology enables businesses to identify key market trends, benchmark their performance against the competition and connect with the right audience and influencers. It performs 130 billion searches each day for clients in Australia and New Zealand, processing 6.5 million documents.

The Norwegian-founded Meltwater opened its first Australian office in Sydney in November 2006 and last year achieved year on year growth of 45 per cent in the ANZ region. It expanded to Melbourne in 2008 and Brisbane the following year, and both teams have moved into new offices this year, and are actively recruiting to support the rapid growth.

In February this year, Meltwater signed a content licensing agreement with the Copyright Agency, providing clients with comprehensive access to data from premium publishers, including content behind the paywall.

The company draws on data from online, broadcast and print media, as well as social media platforms, enabling businesses to look beyond their own internal walls and obtain a complete and intelligent understanding of their brand’s image in the market.

Meltwater calls this ‘Outside Insight’.

Area Director for Meltwater Australia, David Hickey, said that businesses could no longer afford to underestimate the importance of online conversations in shaping business strategy, and that Meltwater was determined to cement itself as a leader in this space.

“Now is the time for Australian and New Zealand brands to improve and mature their online media analysis. They need to be able to harness the data out there, whether it is about them, their stakeholders or their competitors, and use it to make decisions based on fact. Brands need to be looking at all forms of online media, not just traditional forms, for a true representation of their presence in the market.

“We are excited to work with the team at Sling & Stone to highlight the importance of ‘Outside Insight’ in Australia and New Zealand. Their energy and enthusiasm for challenger brands like ours will be hugely valuable in driving awareness for Meltwater as we continue to expand and innovate in the industry.”

Managing Director of Sling & Stone, Vuki Vujasinovic, said that the team love that Meltwater has a different approach to intelligence gathering.

“Instead of running a campaign and analysing it afterwards using outdated measurements, it’s now possible to get on the front foot and learn more about your market and your industry than ever before. Any brand that focuses on internal measurements and ignores insight from outside, beyond its walls, is missing a trick.

“Everyone is looking for an unfair advantage, and we look forward to helping more businesses discover how they can turn external data into valuable, actionable insight.”

About Meltwater
Meltwater helps companies make better, more informed decisions based on insights from the outside. We believe that business strategy will be increasingly shaped by insights from online data. Organisations will look outside, beyond their internal reporting systems to a world of data that is constantly growing and changing. Our customers use these insights to make timely decisions based on real-time analysis. More than 23,000 companies use the Meltwater media intelligence platform to stay on top of billions of online conversations, extract relevant insights, and use them to strategically manage their brand and stay ahead of their competition. “Most companies spend a lot of effort mining internal data, but underestimate the wealth of business insights that can be extracted by mining the large amount of information openly available on the internet,” said Meltwater Founder and CEO, Jorn Lyseggen. “Advances in data science have paved the way for a new class of business intelligence. We have leveraged this to rebuild the Meltwater platform from the ground up to present real-time insights from the outside that can be used to drive business strategy.”

“Businesses must look beyond internal reporting systems and to external data, both structured and unstructured, in order to have a complete view and understanding of their market” said Jay Famico, Practice Director, Technology at SiriusDecisions. “This is hard to do, and beyond the technical complexity, even data science teams that do this well have a difficult time securing internal stakeholder buy-in. However, with the launch of easy to use tools in the market, we’re going to see an increase in organizations using external data to make day-to-day decisions.”

Meltwater’s 23,000 customers are already looking outside, beyond their internal reporting systems to a world where information is constantly changing. They know that external factors can be as important as internal, that the scope of the influencer community is expanding, and that reputations can shift within minutes. To navigate this changing environment, organizations need to move to real time media intelligence.

The new Meltwater solution has been completely redesigned with a modern user experience and workflows to help:

  • Cut through the noise – find the meaning in billions of conversations and identify what’s important
  • Track the market and see their impact – use analytics and real-time dashboards to take the guesswork out of market trends and campaign performance
  • Connect with key influencers – drive the conversation in any channel by delivering the right content to the right audience
  • Compare their brand – benchmark their performance against the competition

“Tools shouldn’t dictate how you work; they should enable you to work how you work best,” said Richard Borean, Manager of Communications at the Tax Foundation. “Meltwater’s new platform offers the freedom and control I demand in a modern PR suite. The new real-time analytics, updated GUI, and faster load times help me work smarter and more effectively.”
