Meltwater uncovers the most popular character on Game of Thrones (GoT)
Over the past 3 weeks, the hype of HBO’s television series – Game of Thrones (GoT) has not died down. Fans of GoT have been raving on social media, filled with anticipation of the long-awaited Season 7.
Everyone was on the edge of their seats for Episode 1 of Season 7, hoping fervently that the burning questions that they had with the closure of Season 6 in 2016, would be answered. When will Jon Snow & Daenerys meet? Will Jorah survive? What is Euron up to?
There were around 165,000 mentions on social media from 25 June to 24 July for all 5 characters listed below – Daenerys Targaryen, Tyrion Lannister, Cersei Lannister, Jon Snow, Arya Stark.
Evidently from the share of voice of these characters, Jon Snow (41%) and Arya Stark (31%) topped the charts. Using Meltwater’s media monitoring tool, an analysis of these 2 characters was done to find out what makes fans of GoT tick.
Daenerys is the most talked about and significantly trending word connected with Jon Snow, pointing to the fact that fans of GoT could not wait for Jon and Daenerys to finally meet – which happened recently in Episode 3. We are all just waiting in anticipation for them to find out that they are siblings.
White Walkers was also one of the top 5 trending themes. The trailer showed a glimpse of Jon Snow in the middle of a White Walker army, leaving fans apprehensive of what will happen to him.
A majority of the conversations on social media took place on Twitter at 69%, with Instagram trailing in second place at 11%.
Globally, Jon Snow got prominently featured in True Viral News (31%), OIA NEWS (14%), NewsDog (11%), Express (eClips Web) (9%) and Augsburger Allgemeine (7%).
North was one of the trending themes. Arya Stark had a very powerful opening scene in Episode 1 where she got her revenge against Walder Frey – “When people ask you what happened here, tell them the North Remembers. Tell them Winter came for House Frey.”
The Ed Sheeran cameo garnered a large amount of chatter online which was rumored to have led Ed Sheeran deactivating his Twitter account. He later clarified this whole incident on Instagram:

Similar to Jon Snow, conversations took place mostly on Twitter (84%) with Instagram (10%) in second place. Twitter seems to be the best platform to discuss trending topics and engage in conversations with fellow fans of GoT.
